Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Can Read PS2 Discs? (Trophy Patent)

Will have to buy the games since I didn't had any original disc at the time

Disk based emulation?? Wow, really Hope that will happen.
Would love to pop in rogue galaxy and play that with a ds/4

This would be so freaking amazing!!!!!
This would make me play all my PS2 games again for trophys.

Would indeed be great. Would love to play some old ps2 games again,  trophy support would be the perfect excuse.

Still, not sure if this is actually the route sony will take when they can sell ps2 games over psn. Will remain hopeful though.

Just to put this out there, the PS4 bluray drive CAN actually read PS1/CD's, it just doesnt support audio cd playback.

:)

Would be really great, that should be the same for PS2 as well then.... I assume it is all software related, the hardware all actually being there.

I think trophy support would be for "enhanced" downloaded version, disk based emulation would just run the game with better frame rate and resolution when possible (it would still be great).

Automated trophies must be really aweful.

Good to know. Not a trophy hunter, but by God I will 100% my old PS1 collection again if those are added in. Even if it means leveling forever just to get Fei's useless final attack in Xenogears again.

Pulling disc ID from an inserted CD/DVD allows for parsing a server side database of games and associated region/title,which could be used to pull down specific configurations per game, or of course, licensing purposes.

Just my $0.02

So you're saying that I can play Gran Turismo 2 again?

It's a nice tech, makes it way easier to add trophies on old games.
Gimme LoD trophies, NOW!
