A dump of thoughts re: VGC forums.

Forums - General Discussion - A dump of thoughts re: VGC forums.

i posted this from my "life raft" just this morning,.. make of it what you will:

the problem with vgchartz moderations is they are focused more on trying to create a culture then they are on trying to have consistent moderation rules.  their goal above and beyond anything else is to cultivate a culture of constructive, intelligent conversation.  the problem in their execution of that ideal is they view any negative statement as a fanboy statement even if well supported with actual facts.  ..and moderation that moderates any thread/user that comes to a negative conclusion that might hurt someone's feelings completely kills any constructive, intelligent conversation.

the moderation is so uneven it's always hard to tell what will/won't get moderated if you are posting something even slightly negative in nature.  then individual users are moderated inconsistently too,.. i personaly can post some really shitty things and get away with it because i have a reputation of sarcasm but if some lesser known individual posted some of the same crap i posted they'd be banned immediately.   which then creates conflict because everyone now views any moderation as biased and unfair which then feeds back into people not wanting to post.

but in short:  you cannot force people to be "positive, people respecting one another, people sharing their shared love for games BECAUSE of that love for games" and attempts to try and force that are counter-productive.  forums are a place for various view points to be expressed, shared, and yes arguged.  conflict is inevitable and frankly part of what entices people to forums.  don't fight that,.. learn the difference between good and bad conflict.  then moderate with a consistent set of rules that doesn't confuse the fuck out of the users.  what is/isn't acceptable is waaay too dependant on who said it and who read it.

in the mean time,.. i don't much care to post here anymore.  the moderation is inconsistent and the certain users have learned how to exploit the modderation team either to shit post or to bait post.  ..and that isn't fun to read or participate in.

anyways,.. i'm heading back to the site i enjoy posting on now..

thats why you shouldn't be a mod here.. we are awefull and in the end you'll be brushed away into the mod graveyard.. i don't think people know how many mods we have gone through...

no mod gets out of here alive...

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

So even Tachi messes your with you're, such a pity!

Being serious, you are trying to fix internet, you can't fix internet, we can try to be nice and get some people together doing it as well, but there will never be peace. Human nature get exposed blatantly on the internet, we're simply like that.

As you said, everyone does wrong, when something wrong affects someone else, a payback envyronment is created, there i no turning back, the room is open for criticism, like my first line on this post, even as a joke, it holds it truth. Someone sometime felt attacked by something, eventually that person will want to do the same, it's a cycle, there is no end, there are several of this cycles being created every single day, everywjere, but specially on the internet, were people fell free to expose the really not perfect human nature (while we trh to hide it better on the real, material world).

We can try to break some cycles but we really can't until everyone is willing to do it, but anyway, watching someone trying to do it its nice, so kudos on going out of your way to do it.

We have problems, but we also have friends, we have our happy times, and I enjoy them every time I can

In the end, it's a forums about people talking about video games.

People are gonna argue, and act uncivil, but unfortunately, there is only so much that can be done about it.

This.

Topics are made for circle jerking and ban baiting and nothing else, might as well just limit threads to OP only and add like buttons votes only.  And that is why I don't post here anymore aside from the PS trophy thread.

So you're basically asking for water not to be wet.

I think the mods are doing a good job but their tools are limited or in need of being updated. Maybe the punishments need to be more creative. Hell, just being able to ban a user from being able to post or create certain types of threads (microsoft, sony, nintendo, political or religious) would be better than resorting to a permaban. Some users are completely decent people until they are in certain type of threads then they turn into asshats. If a person can't behave their self in a type of thread, prevent them from posting or creating any threads there for a set amount of time.

I appreciate mild, light-hearted, not harsh and insult-free trolling, so I appreciate your nonsanctimonious approach to moderation, Tachi, keep this way and good job.
