Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Ships Over Three Million Copies Worldwide, Matches MGS4

A Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ad has appeared on several Japanese websites, publicizing a worldwide shipment milestone of over three million copies for Hideo Kojima’s recently released labor of love.

You can see it below. The Japanese lettering on the ad reads:

“Cumulative worldwide shipments: three million copies breakthrough.”

That’s definitely a great initial result for the game, and the appropriate reward for all the work and love that went into bringing Metal Gear Solid V to our screens.

Considering the timing of the ad, and the fact that Konami did not have the time to restock retailers yet, this number should actually indicate day one shipments. It’s perfectly in line with the performance of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots, that also shipped over three million copies worldwide at release.

Looking at the reactions from fans and critics, Kojima-san’s last foray in the Metal Gear Solid series is a positively well deserved success. I’m sure I’m not the only one hoping to see him back at the helm soon, maybe with a new IP that will sweep us off our feet again.

Personally, even at the cost of sounding a little unprofessional, that’s a story I’d really like to write.

I hope a certain loudmouthed member that predicted 5 million sellthrough first week and the game being a "guaranteed million seller on PS4 in Japan" sees this.

Was Witcher 3 more successful?

Game on 5 platforms matches sales of game on 1 platform. Not sure if that's a success. Great sales anyway.

MGS4 has the same numbers only being on PS3. MGSV on 5 platorms, not very impressive in comparison.

It's just as impressive It just shows how the fanbase has become fractured across the entire gaming scene rather on one platform.

I'll wait for the sold through numbers, right now though it sure looks unimpressive considering that it was released in 5 platforms and not on just 1.

Is this every platform combined?

Wow, this is really underwhelming. 5 platforms vs. 1, add in digital, add in PS4 bundles, add in all the Kojima controversy, this game should have sold more than its predecessor a decade earlier.
