Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii 2008 VS XB360 2011 in the US

which do you prefer?

XB360 9 23.68%

Wii 15 39.47%

Both are fantastic. 14 36.84%

Total:38

The US, imo, is the most interesting market if not just for the fact that things change so often. The winners each gen since the NES are.

NES
Genesis
PS1
PS2
Xbox 360

With the exception of Sony, it's been a new champion each generation.

Because PS2 owned the US market so its still discerning that its successor had such a big drop, especially compared to its competitors the 360 and Wii

xbox 360 started ahead thanks to a price and a 1 year head start advantage then it expands its lead even further thanks to kinect.  The devices gave the console new life in sales, in fact, thanks to kinect, 360 manage to outsell Wii in US.

omg the colors are perfect

The Wii was a beast, no question about it but 360 numbers was also impressive considering it started to sell much better mid gen thanks to Kinect. That's why I don't see xbox one reaching 80m consoles unless MS bring another device that capture the market they way Kinect did.

Both was a beast in the US.

The Wii more, but even the XB360 number's was insanity.

the Q1 and the holidays was also pretty close!

According to wiki and NPD, the Genesis beat the SNES in the US. Lots of people think the SNES won out in the end, but those people never have any proof and are usually just mixing WW numbers in there.

I blame revisionist historians. That and Sega being REALLY bad at business to the point where unlike Nintendo, we've almost forgotten about their once dominant position.

Can you give me a link?

I used the VGChartz number's, but considering the history of this site...

It's very hard to track down. If you google NPD sales for Genesis, you'll find some info, but it's scant. Here is a link to a sales source stating that the Genesis maintained it's lead over the SNES in the US.

"Indirect Network Effects and the Product Cycle: Video Games in the U.S., 1994–2002"

It shows that as of 1995, the SNES had 8.5 million to the Genesis' 10.6 units sold in the US.

Kinect.

Kinect arrived in 2010. That doesn't explain why PS3 didn't do as great in NA as it did in Europe, Japan, and RoW.

Because the USA loved Kinect, and everywhere else the reaction was, a bit meh. But anyway this is off topic because it's a Wii vs 360 thread.
