No no no, that's not what the public wants, say your catchphrase!

Tbh, does my thread about japan being the trendsetter look less silly now?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.
Great thread Kowen!
Lots of info. Its always scary to see how well Nintendo and Sony were doing back in 07/08 and compare it to how they are performing now.
Oh... a doom thread.
I've got the hammer and nails..... who's bringing the coffin?

While we're at it, could you do these graphs without the handhelds? Just for comparison's sake. |
U mad? then it wouldn't be a doom thread anymore!!!!
If he did though, you will find that every single generation since the NES, total sales of home consoles has always increased with every generation compared to its last. Every single one of them. I did those numbes a while back.

I was looking at it from an industry wide perspective. But if you want a company view. Playstation will never be anywhere near as big as it was (much like its parent company), Ninty will never be as big as it was. Xbox? not sure. It hasnt really shrunk much yet. |
Depends how you define the industry i suppose. As far as dedicated platforms go, sure, things are a lot worse than they used to be. Gaming in general though (home consoles, handhelds, mobile and PC) is looking pretty good.
I don't think anything is going to be as big PlayStation used to be, as least as far as single home platforms go. The PS4 at least has the potential to take 2nd place behind the PS2, which i imagine Sony are pleased with (especially since the PS4 isn't the money sink the PS3 turned out to be). Should also be interesting to see what happens with PSNow.
Fully agree on Nintendo. They hit the golden road with the DS/Wii combo, which is incredibly unlikely to happen again.
Xbox will be fun to watch. The X1's current situation isn't pretty at all, but there is plenty of time for MS to turn things around.

it isnt a doom thread its cold hard facts. |
Hahaha..... Trust me, do the numbers without the handhelds. You will see for yourself that every gen since the NES, home console install base has increased by around 20/30% with each new generation. every single one.
As for handhelds, I have personally never bought a handheld in my life. I hate them. And it doesn't surprise me that they are losing their appeal. Smartphones are a natural replacement to them, it skinda how you don't see anyone buying ipods anymore either. I personally felt, that having looked at the smartphone industry the single most stupid thing sony has done in a while is make the PSV.
This is really good stuff. Thanks for the chart.
The trend recently is rather depressing. WiiU and Vita both dropped the shipment numbers massively.
MS without a handheld to skew the data is really nice. They are more or less flat and I wonder if they will remain so (probably)
Zekkyou said: Seeing as these charts include handhelds, is anyone even remotely surprised by these numbers? Were it not for the sudden huge rise and then "fall" of handheld gaming the charts would look a lot more consistent. |
Exactly. Some may try to spin this into some kind of DOMZ!, but it isn't. The only one who should be concerned, if we are looking at combined sales, is MS. Overall shipments after support for the 360 is dropped are going to look horrid. For Nintendo, this just shows the 3DS is doing okay, but peaked early, while the Wii U isn't doing so great. The PS3 has dropped quite a bit, but that's normal for how long gen 7 lasted. And the Vita isn't doing so great outside of Japan. Both of which don't change that the PS4 is doing great and will continue to.
Basically, what we already knew, just in chart form.
The market can't survived 2 duds like it did in the ps2 era, I hope Microsoft and Nintendo can get their act together.
Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
