Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the reason people are jumping on the PS4 hype train because 360 and Wii disappointed so much last gen?

I can only imagine that people were really unhappy with both the 360 and Wii last gen. So people want the sure thing this time around. They had it with the PS2, but Microsoft and Nintendo marketing strategies somehow got them to "try" new things.

Well they are done trying new things and are going back to the king. Am I right?

Being cheaper helps a lot as well....

Plus as this last generation ended, which system had the most hype going for it? PS3. Last of Us was on everyones radar, whether they bought it or not. People saw the greatness of what the PS3  was, saw that they mostly missed it because they were playing Halo, CoD, and Gears on 360 and ....k....umm...Kirby's Epic Yarn, Endless ocean, and other shovelware treasures on the Wii ( Im just playing...and Mario).

No more mistakes! Am I right everyone?

no. i played xbox 360 and that console was awesome. it pooped on the ps3 in almost every aspect, just like the ps4 poops on the Xone now in almost every aspect. Xone is weaker, more expensive, you HAVE to buy kinect, and if those fails were not enough there was the marketing disaster which completely killed it off.  also, i like the ps 4 lineup, interface and almost everything more.

People are jumping on the hype train because PS3 was disappointing last gen, making it the underdog. People love underdogs.

Or maybe they enjoyed the ps3 and therefore thought the ps4 would make a good console too? That certainly played a part in my decision to get the ps4. I really didn't care about the ps3's sales relative to the 360 and wii. The most important thing for me was to deliver the games, which the ps3 did in spades and I believe the ps4 will do so too.

That's why I bought a PS4 as well but overall the PS3 just was not a good product. High price, complicated hardware, slow menus, not enough RAM for the simplest things like cross game chat, visually less impressive multiplats, then that whole security breach. The content was what saved it in the end but on a physical level it was just bad and got its ass handed to it by both other systems for most of the gen.

PS4 is a complete reversal and that boosts the hype beyond normal levels.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I jumped on the hype because I was absolutely let down by Microsoft's nickle and dime, corporate conglomerate attitude. Yes, XBL was awesome and worth the money. And yes, the UI was buttery smooth. But in the end, for someone who has grown up in the industry since the early 80's, the stench of greed and BS was just too much for me.

Sony may not be Nintendo, in that they're more of a business. But they atleast GET gamers and understand that that's the most important thing. Microsoft just seems like another Wall Street capitalistic machine.

Generally speaking I think most 360 buyers were quite happy with their purchase long term (RROD issues aside).

The main thing is those people want a next-gen console and the PS4 is $100 cheaper with the same third party games. Halo is a big franchise but it doesn't tip the scales that much (neither does any Sony IP) ... it's all about where can I get the third party games and right now Sony is offering a more attractive proposition for a next gen machine with the better pricing.

I dont think its hype as much as price point. X1 will sell a ton once its $400 as well. PS3 sales went up quite a bit at that point as well as 360(the 60 or 120gb console, people didnt really want the arcade @400). The people buying 4 @$400 are likely the same group that bought the 3 at that point.

Even if the X1 was 400 it still wouldnt sell as much as the PS4. Maybe in the US, but not in europe.

If X1 isnt cheaper you can forget about european sales. Besides, now that the PS4 has a huge momentum, theres really little they can do to change the situation. As the proverbial says: The people have chosen. The PS4 is gonna be sold out all the way till the summer if not longer.

In Europe, it does look like we´re looking at another PS2 type situation.

360 no. Wii U yes. BUT heres the thing, I think Wii dissastifaction is contributing to WIi U not doing so well. remember it hasnt been doing hot long before PS4 or One hit the market.

360 yes. I am one such case. The 360 was my main system through last gen. I was so dissatisfied after 5 years i got a PS3 and am getting a PS4 this gen. Microsoft, never again.

So yeah... its safe to assume many got pissed off with the RRoD, with the lack of exclusives and the way Microsoft abandoned the system in the last 2 years and the greedy policies ushered in. That unveil of the X1 didnt help one bit either. So... yeah you can bet theres lots of people unhappy with the 360.

Consoles are longtime investments, unlike PC hardware which is a more right-now deal. So consumer trust goes a long way with consoles and Sony has the best track record with the first two consoles and especially with the late gen PS3 support with MS leaving their second console to die a lonely death (as opposed to the euthanized first console.) Iwata strategies were apparent that they didn't include hardcore/committed gamers and anything caring the Wii logo will be treated as boxed cancer.

PS was always the biggest brand in gaming since it was introduced so people were always going to pick the PS4 over the rest. Even the PS3, whose release Sony really messed up, sold more than 80M and is still selling.

Nope.

Both consoles had very successfull runs. PS4 is dominating because: 1 ) it´s 25% cheaper than the XboxOne - and pratically has the same content (considering what people want, like CoD, AC); 2 ) Nintendo did a really bad marketing job with the WiiU

The only place on earth where the PS4 is a total failure is in Brazil. Here most people are looking for XboxOne, 3ds or WiiU. Some retailers don´t even keep an PS4 section on their videogame corners. This is nuts, I know, but that´s true.
