Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Bravely Default - Neverending grinding, plus general discussion

So i'm attempting the Vampire Subquest on Chapter 4 and he's completely destroying me. Using a party of a maxed Spiritmaster, Ninja, Templar and Arcanist, I manage to bring down his hp into the Tens of thousands HP range (he has 300K HP on Hard) but then he just spams Energy Burst over and over again, nullifying my Rampart shield.

And here I was thinking the 6 elemental dragons were hard enough >_>.

Edit - Lester's down and out . The battle in itself was of all epic sorts since figuring out the synergies between the Spiritmaster and Templar classes are amazing. Perma-Rampart shield basically destroyed Lester.

Unless the Dark Knight and Conjurer classes are better, the Vampire class is the best one in the game, thus far, for me.

Some of the enemy abilities are insane when used by your party. Hellfire with a P.Atk of over 250 is overkill to any mob not resistant to fire.

Dark Knight is lame. You have to have low HP to do high damage, but even then the damage output isn't all that great; and there's the constant risk of dying that comes with it.

Conjurer gains MP from killing enemies, so you can use the strongest magic of your choice for mobs without running out of MP. Vampire and Conjurer are the hardest jobs to get, so I guess that's why they are the most overpowered ones. There are a few other game-breaking combinations in the game though, like maxed Swordmaster + maxed Pirate. Swordmaster has an ability to go two turns without requiring MP, Pirate has a quadruple damage attack that normally costs around 280 MP. If you've saved up 3 BP, you can activate the Pirate attack seven times for free over the course of two turns which amounts to almost 70k HP damage, if you reach the damage limit each time. And that's just one character.

Putting in a damage limit of 9,999 is a dick move, especially when the only way around it is to use SP which tie into microtransactions. Absolutely pathetic.

There's a damage limit breaker somewhere in the game. I've seen someone post a 57K power move on miiverse, so it might be post-game or in the secret dungeon or whatnot.

That combo seems extremely broken for the offensive side. In the defensive aspect of things, if you have a Spiritmaster and a Templar in your party, then you can permantly activate Rampart by using a combination of Moderation, Convert BP and Rampart. You'll basically be immune to physical hits and moves for the rest of the fight, that's how I survived Lester.

Genome abilities are insane. Some can actually give Poison to resistant enemies with ease and that easily sets up an extremely damaging 4x Exterminate turn.

SP are the damage limit breaker. In other words, Bravely Second.

Just got that message when I got to chapter 5. It's a bit sad since it's linked to the SP system, so it can be exploited via microtransactions, though I usually always have the SP at max as I always leave the game on sleep mode when I'm at work.

Edit - Dear goddess i'm gonna wear out the X button if I have to awaken all the crystals in more chapters. That should have been an automatic cutscene now >_>.

How does BD compare to other JRPGs you´ve played over the last 5 years or so?...is it one of the better games?

To me, so far, it's on par with Lost Odyssey, Dragon Quest V (NDS) and Dragon Quest IX, which were my favourite JRPGs in recent years. And yes, I've played Xenoblade Chronicles (get asked this question a lot around here).

And it's BD (Bravely Default) .

After FFX on the PS2, I stopped enjoying JRPGs (which was my favorite genre in the PS1 days) for a long time until I played Lost Odyssey, so it´s good to see you, a veteran player, is putting BD on par with LO, I´m even more interested in the game now.

Plus, I hear it´s made by the same team that developed 3D Dot Game Heroes?...cause I love 3DDGH.

Indeed, it was made by a cooperation between Silicon Studies, S-E and 5pb (the studio that designed the scenarios in the game, which look amazing).

BD doesn't have the depth of story that LO has (lets face it, few games do, it was that good), but it compensantes by having an extremely good gameplay which really takes advantage of the turn-based and job systems. The game can also be tailored to your experience, so it can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be, with different difficulty and encounter levels.

Plus, it has great characters whom are very well developed and a exceedingly good VA, easily surpassing a lot of VAs in console games (the Swordmaster Kamiizumi english VA is pretty good, even better than his Japanese VA), and you can change between english and japanese VA.

Hard mode, dude, I like you. I really do. But when you pull shit like this, I just want to throw the frigging 3DS through the window.

Overworld, farming JP for Dark Knight Job. Get into a 2 Hamadryad fight, enemy has first strike, one Hamadryad uses Lullaby (puts everyone to sleep), other uses R.I.P (kills everyone under sleep). Instant Game Over, lost 10 DK job levels, an entire afternoon of breaks between work.

And yes, I say Hard mode for a reason. While you could get the same thing on Normal, since enemies have much lower stats, status effects rarely stick to your characters, while on hard you need an insane amount of Mind Stat to resist status effects.
