I feel sad for Devil's Third and Splatoon.

They should sell at least half of what COD does on 1 platform.(that isn't  wii/wiiu.) That said, I would have voted for either Starfox or XCX, though I'm unsure if I can squeez one of them in to buy this year.

No, people choose what they think they want. But when the game is out and they see the gameplays, the youtubers, the reviews or the people talking about them they choose to buy them or not. This is just expectations. Of course Star Foxs has more expectations than Splatoon. Nobody has ever played Splatoon. But Star Fox had at least 4 - 5 millions of fans around the world.
