The Last of Us helped give it an early Q3 boost, and Grand Theft Auto made up the last 10% it was lagging. The PS3 had more big software titles to keep it flat, and it's only for the quarter. Q1&2 were down, and Q4 will likely be too.

GT6 coming in Dec, with bundles as well, should keep it close to flat or flat even. Then again, the PS4 will surely steal sales, so it could come up short.

I was wrong about GT5 sales, so my opinion is probably wrong here, but I don't think GT6 will push as many systems as GT5 did. I'm not sure about European pre-orders, but GT6 only has 1/4th as many pre-orders as GT5 8 weeks before launch in USA, and 1/10th as many pre-orders in Japan.

http://www.vgchartz.com/preorders/40433/USA/ - GT5

Also even if GT6 pushed as hard as GT5, Call of Duty Ghosts is looking to fall short of older Call of Duty sales, and a good percentage of Call of Duty and Battlefield fans will be switching to PS4/One ASAP. Plus Naughty Dogs big game already released in the summer.

Then like you said, the PS4 itself will likely hurt sales, so I dunno. With the exception of GTAV, PS3 was only holding about 80% the sales volume it had in 2012, which is still good. I wouldn't expect PS3 to do any better then 80% of 2012's numbers, which would put PS3's year end numbers over 11 million still.

Maybe GT6 can bring that value to 85% or 90% as well as 2012, but it won't be flat IMO.

Japan is so different from the rest of the world it is kind of crazy.

Kind of hard to read the graphs.

Nice thread, now if Kitler would do another sales thread based on the entire lifetime of the current selling consoles I would be really impressed.

Over that time period Japan bought 49.8 % of all 3Ds handhelds.

Europe bought 22 % of the 3DS sales.

America bought 19.1%

America bought 21.6 % 0f PS3s.

Europe bought  44.2 %of PS3s.

Japan bought 8.4 % of PS3s.

Europe bought 33.8 % of 360s

America bought 44.6 % of 360s

Japan bought a negligable amount of 360s.

America bought 39.0 % of Wii Us

Europe bought 19.5 % of Wii Us

Japan bought 29.3 % of Wii Us

I feel like I am doing some stats again. If I had to choose a market to own though it would have to be Amerca as they buy more hardware early in a gen. Europe seems to buy more hardware later in a gen.

Really impressive of PS3 to stay flat despite PS4 coming. The next quarter will be superinteresting though :).

I am incredibly late to this party! A very interesting read as always. Thanks.

I have some notes:

"PSP is doing okay, likely due to sales in other regions outside of Europe (because VGC thinks Europe is the whole world outside North America and Japan)" - This is actually not true. VGC have another region called Rest of the World.

I think you might have WiiU wrong in the Europe Hardware Sales table

Also, I don't understand where the "Plus xxm" numbers come from in the best selling consoles table. They do not match up with the numbers in the Worldwide sales table (first table). Same thing for the "Current Generation Regional sales table".

Correct me if I'm wrong!

RE Rest of World - That's true, but PSP is still doing well in Europe, nearly half of its sales come from Europe.

WiiU - VGC did an update just after I published this, they may have changed the number significantly.

As for the rest, my charts were made using data up to October 5th, so the numbers don't match up because a) the data is 3 weeks old, and b) VGC did a major update in that time.

As for the "Plus xx million" that's how many units sold in the quarter. i.e. Q3 2013 (Plus xx million is what it gained since the last update, giving it the number it has listed there)
