While it's a similar situation, I don't think the Vita is quite that doomed. Once the Vita gets games, the sales will follow.

The main thing i see working in the Vita's favor is it has the potential to live a much longer life than the 3DS, if Sony continue to support it for many years and it gets those damn games. That's of course assuming mobile hasn't destroyed handheld gaming by then ^^;

I think you got that the other way around. Looking at sales the future of the Vita looks quite bleak in contrast to the 3DS.  Besides I have yet to really see a game on the Vita that totally blows the best of 3DS has to offer.

No, I don't at all ^^ My point is that the 3DS is going to age pretty quickly (It's sales are already slowing). As I said, this assumption is based on the Vita managing to get a stable game library, which it currently doesn’t have. If it does that, coupled with its tech being advanced enough to keep it relevant for a very long time, it has the potential to outlive the 3Ds by a fair few years.

You aren’t serious about your second statement are you? I refuse to believe someone could say that with a straight face :P here is some footage of Killzone: Mercenary - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS8ytlSkVw0
I would love for you to find me any game that looks even 1/2 as good. We can even ignore how Killzone is in 720p, just find me one that looks that good when played at the same resolution :P

I should note that I don't own a Vita, but do own a 3DS (two actually, upgraded to the XL). I have no bias in handheld arguments, am just pointing out how absurd your second point was.

^That's a lot of wishful thinking you know.

No its a Vita

Game Gear was a Master System in your hands at a time when the Sega Genesis was the standard. It would be like having a PS2 comparable portable at a time when the PS3 was standard. Vita runs pretty faithful ports of PS3 titles.

As a Vita owner, I know the Vita has an ultra sharp screen but I don't think I've seen anywhere that the Vita can run ANYTHING at 720p.  I don't think the screen is capable.  I could be wrong, though.

The Vita runs qHD resolution, which equals 960x544. It's about half of 720p (a bit more). It can, however, playback 720p or even FullHD Videos, but of course, they will be downscaled.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

i think it's more of a lynx 2 or something. great specs, bad price, no games. and the competitor, low specs, great price, lots of games.

lol, i love how everyone says this. The Vita has so many great games, possibly better than the 3DS line up. The problem is Vita's games arent big franchise system sellers. 3DS has Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and MonHun

Well, I think the Vita is already better than Game Gear, which had so few good, original games. Vita might be heavy on ports and remakes, but it has a few homegrown gems.

But in terms of the relationship to its competitor, then yes, the Vita is like Game Gear: more powerful, but hosting far fewer must-have games.

The Game Gear didn't have the best handheld of its generation though.

Not at all. Because back in it's day the Game Gear was actually rather popular. It actually sold, up to a certain point, for a few years. It actually had hype and people actually played it. It was bulky, battery life was god awful, and the screen had the worst glare you can imagine. But it was still more successful, at least for a couple of years, than the Vita has been. So no, the Vita is not yet in danger of being more relevant and successful than the Game Gear.
