Recycle Steam Community items like Trading Cards, backgrounds, and emoticons from your Inventory into Gems and use it to bid on games up for auction. The first auction round ends on 16 Dec @ 4:00am with a new round ending every 45 minutes until the last auction round ends on 19 Dec @ 7:00am. At the end of each auction round, the top bidder for each title wins.

Oculus VR swallows up a three course meal of one mo-cap expert and two developers

Comment

The news that there were still people not employed by Oculus VR did not go down well in the companies underground lair, which is also on the moon. That’s why the VR developer isn’t just hiring individuals, now, it’s swallowing up whole teams. You probably know someone working there now, or perhaps you are reading this from your office in the aforementioned underground layer.

Today, Oculus VR announced three new acquisitions amounting to many brains that will be consumed by the virtual hive mind: Nimble VR, 13th Lab and mo-cap expert, Chris Bregler.

Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition 1.3 sorts multiplayer; "We nailed all the little problems"

Comment

When we talked to Beamdog’s Trent Oster about Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, we were prepossessed with the future of D&D RPGs - but he was just as concerned about mistakes made in the past with one of the best RPGs on PC.

“We rushed Baldur’s Gate II out. It’s that simple. We rushed it and we screwed things up,” he told us. “1.3 fixes a ton of things. That thing is massive. The number of fixes in there is just insane.”

Source code for Doom’s 3DO port has been released online

Comment

Yesterday we all had a bit of a song and dance about Doom celebrating its 21st anniversary. That came with photos of its creative process, but today brings something a whole lot more technical: source code. In specific, the source code for Doom’s 3DO port.

It also comes coupled with a short story by Rebecca Ann Heineman, the coder who was tasked with bringing Doom to the console. The transition from PC to console was certainly not a smooth one…

STALKER Apocalypse is the new project from the devs who tried to make Areal

Comments1

Remember Areal? It was the domed Kickstarter project from West Games; a team supposedly made up of members who worked on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The project went through a turbulent fundraising period and was eventually pulled.

But that hasn’t stopped West Games from dreaming the dream. They’re back, this time with a game pitch that’s even closer to nabbing them a copyright infringement ticket than ever before. Take a look at STALKER Apocalypse.

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer: “It's time for us to talk about gaming on Windows”

Comments12

It’s easy to feel that Microsoft, custodian of one of PC gaming’s biggest platforms, has being ignoring computer games for many years. Afterall, when their biggest contribution to the scene has been the troublesome Games for Windows Live, it’s not difficult to see Microsoft in a less-than-positive light.

Hopefully change is on the horizon, though. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Studios and the company’s Xbox division, has said that gaming on Windows will be a talking point in 2015.

How to rebuild a publisher: Atari on Haunted House and their future on PC

Comments1

As I dial into a conference call with Atari COO Todd Shallbetter, my questions about the new Haunted House reboot fade away like a Graves residence ghoul. They’re replaced by a single, unignorable one: who the hell are you people, anyway?

Like the bright bead in Video Pinball, the Atari name has bounced about so often over the past three decades that it’s been impossible to follow. This is no longer the Atari who seared the image of an upside-down cheese string into the retinas of arcade-goers in the late ‘70s; nor the one that staved off a D&D drought in the noughties with Neverwinter Nights and The Witcher

So who are this iteration of Atari, and what do they want with the PC?

Dog Sled Saga Has It All: Dogs, Sleds, A Saga

By Shaun Green on December 13th, 2014 at 3:00 pm.

Huskies are brilliant dogs. This isn’t just because they look great (to my mind, only the Shiba Inu hedges ‘em out). It isn’t just because they haul sleds (although that, too, is brilliant). It’s because they’re great dogs for facts. For example, did you know that they’re one of the oldest existing dog breeds, believed to have been about for over three thousand years? Or that they can travel about hundred and fifty miles in a day – in Siberian conditions, whilst hauling loads? Or that they can run at up to fifty miles per hour?

Well, now you do. And now that you’re equipped with almost as many huskie facts as I am, we’re ready to journey together into the world of Dog Sled Saga.

One Cut: Samurai Duelling In Kiai Resonance Trailer

By Cara Ellison on December 13th, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

It’s not knowledge I often get to use, but I have a shodan in Iaido, the Japanese art of the drawing of the sword. I practised Musoshinden Ryu in a budoukan on the quiet side of Kagoshima city, Japan. It is a precise and very frustrating martial art to learn: one learns first how to tie the hakama, or plaited trousers, then one learns how to tie the obi so that the sword hilt sits almost horizontal, right at the navel for quick draw. Then one learns to sit, for hours, in seiza – folded knees. Then meditation, a bow to the sword on the floor in front of you.

But Kiai: Resonance gets right, aha, to the point. It’s a samurai duelling game about one hit kills. One hit kills were the speciality of the samurai in the Kagoshima region, where I studied.

Strewth, It’s Strife – Veteran Edition

By Adam Smith on December 12th, 2014 at 5:00 pm.

Strife, originally released in 1996, could be seen as the answer to that most famous of critical questions in the history of gaming. Not ‘Were Sonic games ever any good?’ or ‘Do people actually enjoy racing games or do they just like the crashes?’ – not even the one about whether the 1982 E.T. game was actually the world’s first misunderstood arthouse walking simulator. Strife answered a very specific question, extrapolated from Edge’s review of the original Doom. What would happen if you could talk to the creatures? In Strife, you can. Eighteen years after its original release, the FPS-RPG is returning later today in a revamped ‘Veteran Edition’.

Valve squashes Counter-Strike: Global Offensive bird surfing bug; community is sad

Comments6

When Valve “rebuilt” their classic Counter-Strike: Global Offensive map Train, they did so with an unintended, but hilarious bug: bird surfing. Players quickly discovered that if they hopped on top of a group of innocent bystanding birds, they could use their flight to “surf” above the map. Things got out of hand when players furthered the exploit to get to the rooftops directly above bombsite A, giving them an unfair advantage.

But don’t worry, Valve have already flown in a hotfix to remove the bug, but not without leaving a subtle nod to its existence in its place.

Blizzard to scrap World of Warcraft's Death Knight level requirement

Comments4

Many moons ago, Blizzard released the Wrath of the Lich King expansion to World of Warcraft, and along with it a new class: Death Knights. They were a special sort, being dubbed as a “Hero Class” due to their unique ability to start the game at level 55, which back then was a big thing. The only hitch was that you needed to already own a character that was over that level, before you could even think about creating one.

Now though, as time has passed, Blizzard have seen it fit to remove that arbitrary requirement.

Skyrim "Enderal" mod is something you should probably be excited about

Skyrim mods are always plentiful, but there’s always a few that try and be something better, something more. A modding team by the name of SureAI is working on a total conversion mod for Skyrim, dubbed Enderal, and it looks stunning. It’s the sequel to their other, and critically acclaimed, total conversion mod by the name of Nehrim: At Fate’s Edge. It forgoes the world of Tamriel, and opts for its own universe.

They’ve just release a breathtaking trailer, teasing a “dark storyline” for the mod, as well as its many distinct environments.
