You came to the conclusion through the videos alone? Man, have we not learned already that games should be played, not watched, in order to build a respectable opinion?

Either that, or it's that mentality of "the game looks pretty damn beautiful. Therefore, it only has graphics, and no gameplay".

What will be so different? The controllers are the same, 12 buttons, two triggers and that's it... PSOne (MS copied Sony again :P ) had those. PS4 has a track pad on their controller... cool... but how do they use it? Nothing is showed, the games seem to play exactly how they would play on PS3 or PS2...

They are right there with their cameras but people are so whining about these technologies that sometimes I wonder if devs are not shy of using them properly. Cameras, motion, mics, the clouds... they have so many inputs... use them!!!

I know they are first gen titles but I need to feel the next gen not only on pretty graphics...

By using that logic, there is nothing different about games ever since the PSOne. You hold the controllers, you press buttons, the games are 3D. By stretching it a little bit, I could say it's the same thing since the NES. I'm not sure how that's a flaw, it's been working pretty damn well so far.

And motion controls don't really work with the vast majority of genres. There are other uses for the camera, but I can't think of anything that would industry-defining.

That's exactly it, you get a controller which feels the same and you press the same buttons for the same movements there is no stretching that's exactly it.

What PSOne, Saturn and N64 brought is 3D and controllers changed because of it. 3D and cds brought a lot of gameplay impossible to do on 16bits era... PS4 and One up til now don't seem to bring anything new... I know I being impatient, last gen was too long and now that the next is here it feels the same.

Someone already wrote a pretty good post in this thread about it. You can't honestly be expecting a COMPLETELY NEW gaming experience just because we're going to a new generation.

Between the PS2 and the PS3, what changed? PSOne and PS2? SNES and PS1 (other than 3D graphics)? Games got bigger and more impressive. They're not just getting prettier. You can't possibly look at me with a straight face and tell that GTA4 is just GTA3 with better graphics. There's also nothing like the Arkham games or Uncharted in the previous generations. Just a few examples.

This is a very annoying point that gets raised and raises my hackles.

Are some of you folks actually expecting a sudden paradigm shift in how we play games simply because we're heading into a new generation?
What did this current gen bring?
Chest high walls, multiplayer on consoles, DRM, cinematic action, dumbing down and so forth, but it did not change HOW exactly we would play games as opposed to the previous generation. And that one was still just a technical evolution of the previous and so on.
Changes in the gaming environment come steadily, gradually, and UNNOTICED. Could you have a friend in some far away place just log on his tablet, send you a help pack in something you're playing, and just drop out RIGHT NOW? Not really. Do you really CARE that you can do that in the next gen and do you care that phones, tablets, consoles and PCs will be forming a more interconnected ecosystem? I don't really think so. But it's a change, one that some people will enjoy, some will scorn.

Otherwise...how would you change gaming? Often, as I ask this, I get "I dunno, something different". It's hard for companies to cater to a need that we don't know to express.

Expecting a sudden paradigm shift is childish. Everyone wants gourmet meals but most will just as well go to MacDonald's.

16bits era to 32bits cd based era changed like everything. The amount of possibilities just went through the roof. Now it's like we eat the same soup over again and again just in a more beautiful bowl.

Like I said what Turn10 are doing with the cloud making the AI act like they are real drivers is something big... I hope more devs will use this kind of approach... cameras should be used a lot more to examine what you are doing so the game acts accordingly like say, some guy in the game asks you to not look at the screen and will wait until you really do, if you look other things happens, this is more immersive than just pushing a joystick to look away (it's just an idea)... nearly anything they showed could be achieved on current consoles with lesser graphics.

Yeah I agree and I'm canceling my Xbox One preorder. $500+tax+Gold+game=$660. PS4=$400+tax+PSPlus+game=$560. Both are ridiculous. I'm sticking with my PC. I'll be missing out on exclusives but I will be able to run every multiplat better than both consoles so oh well. I may pick a console up when they drop to $299.

i'm guessing multiplayer/co-op gaming goes up a notch or 2 this gen

Watch these videos and say that again with straight face.

These videos are exactly why I started this thread... what did they show that wasn't possible on current gen except for the graphics?!?

It's a direct continuation of the design philosophy that drove the games in the 7th

Exactly this. By buying their games, we sent a message that we were OK with their direction. So we get more HD, more bloom, and more cover based near future shooters.

The way to ensure the 9th gen offers something very different is to not buy into the 8th.

The culmination of all this 7th gen nonsense came today when I watched a gameplay video from the upcoming Thief game... Technology could add so much depth to gameplay but instead they foucs on hand-holding and stupid gimmicks as selling points and spend entire budgets on particle effects while booting out every employee that could have written a single interesting piece of dialogue or plot.

The development now is grim indeed for my part, the worst danger signs I'm seeing is developers like Bioware starting to go for chest high walls and cover-based shooting and removing RPG elements (Dragon Age and Mass Effect) and strategy games getting rid of the need to employ actual strategy (Might & Magic Heroes VI springs to mind as a perfect example).

Next-gen gameplay. The Division in particular is in no way possible on current-gen. If all you are doing is watching trailers, of course you're only noticing the graphics. Read up on the some next-gen games.

CD and 3D gaming brought a lot to be honest. Way more that any gen after that. Sounds were far better, music was more engaging, full motion videos. 3D brought another dimention that completely changed the gaming industry. Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, DDR games, FPSs, Sports everything was so different that you had to learn to play all over again... now I'm getting tired of the same things...

If only we had a gimmick like virtual reality this gen instead of just gorgeous graphics

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

most of the games are cross gen, you won't see true next gen games until late 2014/15. This arguement is still as stupid as it was when the Dreamcast was announced anyway.
