Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii is always on and always connected

I understand people's concerns regarding the always online (as long as it's wifi I wouldn't care) but I'm waiting for the official reveal before commenting on how smart/stupid the idea is - if it's the case at all.

I have heard rumour MS is working with cable companies to have them subsidize the cost of the 720. IE: Sign up for two years of _______ internet service and get a 720 for $99!! In this particular case, it's to the internet supplier's interest for the 720 to require an online connection. So it's possible it may only be required on 720s sold/given in this manner but not ones you pay full price for.

But we simply don't know at the point.

Jup, we don't know.  And frankly I really can't imagine that MS follows through with it. But if everybody would just wait and see, MS might think its worth trying, now atleast they see people don't like that idea at all, if its not optional like you proposed atleast.

Buts its not mandatory to be connected to play games on the wii. I've always had fairly solid internet connection but every now and again it goes down or my xbox has problems connecting. That would render my xbox720 useless..

For me its not a deal killer... But it does make the ps4 a far more appealing option. If both both ps4/720 had the feature I would still end up buying one of the systems.

As I said, IF the Nextbox needs to be online to play games it would be a deal-killer. But at the moment that's a more or less unlikely rumor. That is my OP pointing at, that the most people talk about could be in the end a feature similar to what the Wii does.

But many of the rumours are specific to it being mandatory to play online. IGN just reported that your game will shut down after 3mins of disconnectivity. From all the info thats been floating about there is no reason to assume they are merely talking having the option to be connected 24/7. I think mayb even my ps3 does that, it switches itself on at night and starts downloading patches etc. Obviously mandatory connection is something that microsoft could change in the blink of an eye, so based on the accuracy of the sp4 rumours, I would assume that this  is the truth as of now, but it could easily be a different story when they actually reveal the system.

What is next? Can't use Gold when I am not online? Can't play my Halo with friends when I am not online? Tss!

Why do some people act as though they don't understand the concerns of the rest  ? All of that needs being connected, playing Bioshock Infinite not.

It is hard to care about the rest when the majority of the rest are people who spend whole days online at forumboards complaining that they will not get a console if they have to be always online;

Big chance like it will works like PSn plus, if you get disconnected from the internet you can still play your games because you simply have to be logged in atleast once in a timeperiod (24 hours/a week/ or even more).

Wow, I'm so sick of these rumours being bought up again and again and again. Sony are the one with the patent, no one says anything, as said above, all 3 consoles from the previous gen can do it and nothing, nothing negative anyway. In my view, it's really not going to be as bad as people are making it out to be. Microsoft aren't stupid, you know that, right?

Sony said outright that they won't be doing something like this. Both companies have had such rumors following them around for months before that.

I do agree, though, that until we get official word of what they're doing we can't start pulling out pitchforks.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

Lets hope you are right. But I wouldn't call that always on this is more like sometimes on requirement. If it works like Steam (1 Month?) I personally wouldn't mind.

@galaki
You can still read cached documents offline, and play games you bought on the net offline.

That is one source (that is cited in many places), and it is saying after 3 minutes pop up a message to fix internet connection. That doesn't specifically mean, that the game will not work. It could be a bug, and the message shouldn't pop up while playing. Kotaku said, other sources can't confirm this, they didn't heard about such a thing. So not many rumors - only one. And then people jumoing to conclusions after the (stupid) comments of Orth and the press info on Orth.

I don't think you know what Always Online for the nextbox means. You can only play your games if you're online and thats not the case with the wii.

What is funny if the always on thing is true is that 20 years from now you can still play the frikkin NES, but not the 720 because the servers don't exist anymore
