Forums - Sales Discussion - Who do you think will win the console wars?

@Stever89

It's a known fact that PS3 sales almost exploded after the 2nd price drop. In both NA and Europe. And it was not about games, becuase there haven't been any AAA PS3 titles yet (not even close), and the so called Blu-ray effect can't have anything to do with the rise in sales since it was only a couple of weeks ago Warner killed HD DVD.

Someone plz make some of those graphs that this site offers! (to show the sharp upward curve after the oct intro of a 40GB SKU)

I'd say the drop from $500 to $400 made miracles, and increase in sales lies in the 30-50% ballpark.

If we'd see a let's say $249 X360 Pro soon, the WW weekly sales would rise to +150,000 units and the console would sell +10 million this year.

EXPLODED? REALLY? Let's have a looksy.. Yes... I see it. I see an European launch. Good its there. I see a 40 GB launch, right near the end, at 10/08/07 or so. If that's not when the 40GB launched, then that might be another price drop. I don't actually see this explosion though. I mean, besides the European launch, which lasted a whole  2 weeks, the PS3 never even beat the Wii? Unless I'm looking at the graph wrong. If the graph shows weekly sales of the PS3, 360 and Wii, for the year 2007, and if it shows the PS3 and 360 hardly ever beating the Wii in weekly sales, then... uh no I'm  not looking at it wrong.

If you would download my comparisons (see my sig) it would take you to a world you don't yet know. And that's  a world with more numbers than you can possibly ever come to understand. But don't worry! I'm working on a slideshow, so you can just hit play, and it'll show you the data, the trends, and little things that make the consoles wars what they are, and then you will be knowledged. And then you will probably tell me to get a life. Don't worry, it's ok.

If you could give me the exact week of the price drop for the PS3, I could point it out.

Since I like being thorough, here's each region PS3 2007 sales but I still fail to see the explosion. Again, tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can know, or give me the week of the price drop so I can make a reasonable analysis. I'm not even joking. I hate being wrong, and if I am I want to know. I'm just saying I can't see the big boosts the price drops gave the PS3 that you are talking about.

To me, sales dont really matter much, just because it sells more does not mean it is better. Probably the main factor in the Wii's success is its price point, so just because it sells more does not mean its the more enjoyable console, the 360 lots of games but plagued with hardware problems, PS3 Blu-ray compatible but high price and not as many games.

Anyways, in sales, I'd say the Wii and PS3 will be pretty close at the end of the generation. I expect Wii sales to drop dramatically by the end of this year or next, people will begin to realize what a rip off it is when they purchase a HDTV, with that being said I expect PS3 sales to take off once HD DVD dies seeing as it plays Blu-rays and plays games in High Definition. I foresee a slow death of sales for the 360 seeing as how its not cheap, and does not have a level of HD-ness comparable to the PS3 (especially since PS3 games are estimated to be only using about 20% of the Cell's potential)

So, PS3 and Wii close for 1st, 360 last.

AHH PRICE POINT ADVANTAGE. Just because it sells more doesn't mean it's the more enjoyable console? Well that's a matter of opinion.

I haven't been a console gamer since the N64 days because I found no reason to continue buying consoles that, to me, gave me no more "enjoyment" than the N64 did. As games were no longer made for the N64 after the PS2/GC/Xbox were launched, I became mostly a PC gamer. Now with the Wii, I can experience something new. Not high end graphics (Supreme Commander anyone?), but something that's not completely possible with anything else. I'm not a big fan of FPS, especially on consoles, since I totally suck at the controls, but with the Wii I can aim and shoot. It's not really any easier than dual analog sticks, but to me, it's easier. But that's just me. Also, watching the PES2008 video using those controls, I'm actually excited about a football video game, which has never happened. I don't even like football all that much. I do love American football, and so I've started playing Madden again (though I haven't actually bought the game yet). But that's only because of the Wii and it's unique abilities.

I also don't think that the HD thing is going to be the "turning" point of the generation. If sales won't tail off until the end of next year (which will be the Wiis third year anyhow, when sales of all consoles should drop, according to past trends), then it'll hardly be a turning point, because looking at sales trends of the 7th generation up to this point, the Wii will be at nearly 60 million, and that's only if Nintendo doesn't raise production (and if the Wii continues to sell out massively). At the end of the third year, the PS2 was at 52 million, and all know how it's compeditors did.

As for the PS3 and Wii tieing, I could actually agree with you, since the Wii might only have a lifespan of 6 years (so there are 5 more years left, meaning end of 2012, possibly not until the end of 2013), whereas the PS3 probably will have a longer lifespan, depending on too many factors to know for sure. See my previous post (the long one) for more detail.

No one has ever given a convincing argument for this, the NES was a gen behind gaming PC's at launch it lasted 20 years in japan (20 years), 10 years in NA, why would Wii have only a six year lifespan

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

PS3 will be a winner in HD gaming.
Wii will be a winner in SD gaming.
x360 made some fanbase, and it aslco accomplished it`s target.

PS3 will definetely easy sell over 100 mln.
Wii, it`s hard to predict. It may do less then 100 mln., it may do around 200 mln.
I am not sure, that those 120 mln. ps2 owners are going to jump for the wii, just because of controls.

So in the end:
ps3 - 120 mln., wii - 100 mln.
ps3 - 100 mln., wii - 90 mln.
ps3 - 160 mln., wii - 200 mln.
ps3 - 200 mln., wii - 180 mln.
ps3 - 140 mln., wii - 60 mln.

Wii will expand market, with people who didn`t played games before. These people after soem time could easy go for HD gaming.
Ps3 will expand market, with people who didn`t played games before. Thnx to stunning graphics like in GT5, KZ2 or FFXIII + inovation games like afrka, lbp, eoj and etc. =)

The NES era was from 1985-1989. People still play their original NES even to this day, but that doesn't mean the era is or was still going on. A console's gen is over when games are done being made on it.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*
