Forums - Sales Discussion - sony narrows gap another million+ during 2012!!!

How sad it is quibbling over a million out of many millions.

I will look at the positives.

X360 success is that it gain massive ground on it's second outing after xbox.

PS3 success is that even with a hefty price, uncertain start and a year lost to it's rival it has stayed close.

No matter how certain people spin it both Sony and MS wanted to win this gen and they made that clear.
The only thing you win for 2nd place is being the first of the losers...guess who said that.

The gap was right about 2mil at the end of last year and stands at about 2mil right now.....I've seem so many threads about the gap closing, but see zero evidence of it.

Exactly I don't see what these threads are about. Everytime we get an update about numbers everything is staying the same and Xbox is around2 million ahead.

Well, just keep waiting. I hope it was rewarding getting another million closed down.

Yay!!!

Totally agree on that. Its sony who needs to sell more to make up the loss they had all these years with ps3

it'll grow a bit next two weeks, but this uear the two are so close (because 360 is down so much) that ps3 will hold and take it all back again during the last two weeks. Then we look to business as usual with a strong winter lineup.
If ms cares about these numbers, we should see a price drop incoming.

They don't.

this gen it's quite clear for MS that it is mission accomplished.

Well I suspect they just want to maintain a lead until the next generation consoles are released for psychological and shareholder reasons. They may just cut the price to $169/$249 and call it a day next year.

Tease.

With the following week being in favour of the 360 and the week after also in favour of the 360 that gain is going to come down.

Slow going.

Come down and go back up. Also, 1.6m+ before the holiday season like I said above, so it's definitely not out of the question that PS3 overtakes it next year (shipments almost certainly).

What's shipments got to do with anything...that's just silly.  Sales is all that matters.  No company is proud to have a ton of unsold merchandise sitting on retail shelves.

Stop hating and start playing.

LOL! Because retailers keep taking consoles that just sit on the shelf lol lol lol

I think it's worth mentioning that PS3 outsold 360 by over 1.6m during Jan-Oct 2012, so it's possible that PS3 will take the lead next year with the 360 stealing it back again when the holiday season comes around and PS3 finally taking it back early 2014.

i disagree. i'm seeing the evidence that PS3 will take the lead by Oct. and keep it.

does anyone think there's a chance that wk8 (current numbers) number will be adjusted? and if so,will it give Sony another small lead for the wk?

I think there is a chance the entire year will get Ps3 adjustments. The only way VGC matches up with Sony's shipped numbers is if sony shipped more Ps2's in April - June and again in July - September this year than they did in October - December last year... even with Ps2 numbers showing a decline the last 4 quarters. Needless to say I don't see that happening. Best case scenario they sustained their Jan-March shipments within both of those quarters and not declining (which again I doubt)... I think that both MS and Ps3 will ship 5 to 5.5 million this quarter and probablly increase shipments closer to christmas it gets. so about 1 to 1.2 million in Oct. (Which would mean Ps3 was at 69million the end of September which would fall in line with Ps2 sustaining their Q1 shipments) 2 to 2.2 million in November and 2 to 2.2 million in December. So, in my opinion the Ps3 is at least 500k undertracked. Possibly up to 800k.

I don't think it was a coincidence that Sony announced their 70mil shipped when they did. I believe they know they are close to MS.

When their big games start hitting: The last of us, two souls, god of war. I could see them passing it fairly quickly. Man it feels like we've been waiting for this to happen forever.
