well, in Japan they wont have that name, unless they want a console to be named "PlayStation Death".

The PS names in Japan use english numbers however... but still I think they are going to skip "4" for this reason all the same.

So...  PS5 confirmed? 2020!  They need to just call it playstation 4, and move on.  Either way you look at it, it's still the fourth home console.  I'd much rather they call it PS4, and not confuse everyone..

For you maybe, from a cultural aspect PS4=PSDeath in Japan. People in Japan will not take to it with that name.

Oh, right...  Forgot about that last part.  The other people in Japan who wouldn't want it in their house, and will say it brings bad luck.  I just don't hold to superstitions at all, and, personally, I use "yon" when counting when it's appropriate...  OR... OR... check this out..  Call it Omni in JAPAN only. すきですか? We got multiple names with the SEGA Genesis, due to copyrights, and the same with with Megaman, and others.  I like that Idea more.

EDIT:

Just thought about this too...  I know it's probably 40 years away, but, what happens when we get to PS7?

– Omni is also part of their philosophy with the new OmniCloud, the new version of Gaktai. This service will not only cloud stream PS1, PS2 and select PS3 games to Playstation Certified devices but will also allow every digital and retail purchase to have access to a copy on the cloud. Basically, you buy one game, you can use it on any Plyastation device. Direct hardware Backwards Compatibility will be available by a $70 – $99 dongle that is plugged into the Omni that contains a PS3 on a chip with Cell to run games.

I'm still curious to know how Gaikai fits in Sony strategy. The months prior to E3 2013 definitely look interesting.

I'm not sure I believe alot of what's actually in these rumors, but I think it gives pretty good insight into the mindset at Sony and what they have planned.

I'm betting the plan is to continue intergrating as many types of entertainment into the system as possible (possibly the reason for the "Omni" name?) so they can give people as many reasons as possible to buy the system. In short I bet the plan is launch early, launch big, launch profitable.

I'm have my doubts about the headset part of this. I think by now companies have realized that unless they can come up with a way of playing that is more intiutive than using a controller than it will fail as pretty much every attempt thusfar has (We'll have to see about the WiiU).

innnteresting. mostly just taggiing, but 400 bucks is a good price point, and it's important to do backwards compatibility. They learned that with PS3. I am also glad that they're not focusing too heavily on "OMGBESTHARDWAREEVER!" like they did with the PS3. systems don't NEED to be huge leaps forward, Call of Duty proves that you can make a good game even with (relatively) crummy graphics.

Besides, I'd be okay with the PS3 being sony's console of choice for the next 5 years. I don't WANT dev costs to skyrocket, I don't WANT game prices to increase, I don't WANT publishers requiring their teams to do in game advertising or DLC gouging to make up for the costs of the game. Keep costs down, push the savings onto the consumer...or we'll end up with another generation where dozens of developers have to shut down or be assimilated into one of the major publishers like activision or EA.

Omni is probably the prototype name like Durango is for next Xbox.

September 2013? lol. More like announcing it in september 2013 at the Tokyo Game show.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Really excited about this, and surprisingly curious about the AR headset. I've been reluctant to embrace the idea of 'innovation' in terms of control input, but as someone pointed out, I feel MS/Sony/Nintendo, more than ever, need to be competing with other markets such as tablets. The lines are blurring as there's so much tech at the minute which is multi-functional and offers gaming (even if it's not necessarily the kind that core audiences want). The battle to remain relevant in a changing industry will force MS and Sony to go down avenues which were once described as 'gimmicky' (and for some, still are).

As for the rumoured price points, they sound ok. The thing is, $450 will not translate in European markets. Pretty certain that package will end up being around £380 in the UK which is so frustrating, but unfortunately that's how hardware works : /

Anyway, colour me excited, the build-up to E3 this year will be more exciting than the event itself has been in the past couple of years.

While I could be wrong, this sounds awful and I couldn't see any company moving forward with a system like this ...

A screen that can turn any tv into 3d and display 4k res video as well as provide video overlay through a semi-transparent screen, and track head movement?

Well, you may be wrong, I may be wrong.

Those are claims that are so ridiculous I would be ashamed if anyone truly believed them ...

which parts are ridiculous so i can school you a bit on how tgeyre easily possible?

Lets start off with 4K, being that is a display resolution of 3840 × 2160 how could Sony afford to produce a system with that display that anyone could afford to buy? Realistically, this would be a display with a pixel density that is (probably) well over 4 times that of a retina display and it would (likely) be a several thousand dollar device on its own.

As for the "turn any TV into 3D" the likely way to do that is using a shutter glasses approach, something that cuts the display brightness in half and requires a high frame rate and screen refresh rate to not seem choppy. Anyone with a 60Hz refresh rate would find it (nearly) unusable, and Sony would need to produce a system that could consistently produce graphics at 60fps.

Ultimately, this fanboy wet-dream is a several thousand dollar system ...

This. September 2013 is bit too early for Sony's new console to release.

The code name is "Orbis"

Now that i read this with more time, i think the omniviewer thing is an incredible risk, but given it optional its a smart initiative marketing wise. This will differentiate the Playstation with a tech that is only found in it, just like kinect with the Xbox and the tablet controller and motion controls on the Wii U.
I am glad its optional, because personally i dont want to get it. I dont think its gonna be very confortable or good for your eyes.
