Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Achievements/Trophies the greatest thing to happen to games this gen?

I remember the good ol days, buy a game play it for a few hours beat the main quest and never look at it again for the next couple years. Times have changed with the introduction of Trophies/Achievements its givin the gamers much more to accomplish then beating the game. Now you have to try and get over a million gil, beat the secret side boss, kill 1000 enemies, get 100 head shots, theres countless new goals for games and many more extra hours in it that you end up spending in it.

So do you agree has Achievements/Trophies givin games much  more purpose?

I would reserve that for Sales going up on all sides. (Except Sony of course...) It's always a good thing to do better than your last generation and Nintendo + Microsoft both did just that.

While I wouldn't say it's the biggest to be introduced this gen, it was certainly a good addition.

It's given certain games more challenge and replay value.

Allthough I don't care for it at all, I do recognize its value overall for the industry. I would, however, argue that proper multiplayer and online support is the most significant thing to happen to games, and especially console games, this generation.

Trophies used to reduce the replay value for me. I wouldn't play a game again if I already had the trophies. Now I just don't care.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

IDK if I would say its the most important thing added this gen

But I know I'm freaking addicted to both of them. So yeah to me its a pretty big deal. Put it this way if Wii U lacks any achievement / trophy system it may be a deal breaker for me.

Soon, there will be support groups for people who have an unhealthy addiction to Trophies/Achievements. But I won't join because I love my addiction.

Not even close, but they are pretty nifty.

For me, online gaming was the best thing to happen this gen sseing as I went from GCN to PS3. Achievements are great sometimes, but games like RDR where they are ridiculous kind of angers me.
