Our commitment is that it will be the most reliable video game box out there. People really love the Xbox because of the content, but we've got to make sure that the hardware never stands in the way of that.

Calm down people. What he is saying is that they are committed to make it the most reliable console, not that he thinks that it is. He is just stating that reliability is now top on their list of improvements.Nothing to flame here.

Microsoft has never been about quality.

Gates makes all kinds of unrealistic assertions based on ignorance: he told us in 2004 that spam would be dead by the beginning of 2006.  He showed a complete misunderstanding of both the social and technical problems faced by the current implementation of SMTP, but that didn't stop him from making wildly foolish comments about it.

I don't trust what Gates says when it comes to anything computers because he doesn't know what he's talking about. He's too willing to speak about things he doesn't know anything about.

Hey, did you know that all Sony does is make video games?  Bill Gates does.  He should correct the Sony pages on Wikipedia with his knowledge:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Corporation_shareholders_and_subsidiaries

Perhaps he doesn't want to admit that Sony, as a company, *literally* has ten times the depth that Microsoft has.

Also, the 33% failure rate is unbelievably generous.  Look at the gaming press as a group if you want a sample: joystiq reports that 9 out of 10 of its editors have had xbox 360 failures.  Other gaming press is even worse: arstechnica reporters have said they had 4+ failures.  People in the SA forums have an "xbox failure thread" where people talk about the service and give facts, dates, timelines and support experiences.

It's reasonable to say that Microsoft has the worst customer service of the big three.  People get conflicting information from Agents, agents have often failed to file requests properly, MS often says that their systems are down and they can help people, repairs fairly often arrive DOA or fail within weeks of arriving and Microsoft will do nothing to facilitate a faster repair.

Oh my gawd... What is it with all this MS hate?

" But the thing is, in real life you are gonna be forced to use windows and visual studio cause that is what everybody uses. And there is a reason: they are really good and solid pieces of software.

Do you realise that what you're hating here is a company? A company with thousands and thousands
employees. Do you realise how childish that is?"

How exactly is Windonws really good and solid? Until Windows XP Service Pack 2 were released, I was getting BSOD every once in a while, my computer would just crush and needed rebooting, not to mention the problems with I've experienced with Internet Explorer.

I just don't get it why Microsoft has to release Windows, then an update, then another update and so on. What have they been developing all those years?

In real life you are FORCED to use Windows.  I wonder where we get those 'evil empire' ideas, honestly.......

And as far as the 'hating the company that has thousands of employees' part, I'll change it a bit to 'hating the company that makes gazillions of dollars selling unfinished or malfunctioning products'. There you go, everyone's happy now!

Tsuki ni kawatte...Oshiokiyo!

Watching "Aa!!Megami-sama : Sorezore no Tsubasa" and loving it!!

Doesn't sound too likely, but I guess the only thing stopping them from making a new model of the 360 that is the most reliable of the current consoles is how much money they want to spend. At the very least they know lots of mistakes that they don't want to repeat. =P

It is the first console ever had so many problems........& most people it can't be most reliable either, because it is Microsoft. LOL

Wow ... are our memories so short that we have forgotten Sony's disk-read errors? Sony denied that for years ... and I know they did, because I had one repaired by them! My Xbox has crashed literally 2 to 3 times.

Repairs cost, and MS would rather pay for the technology to slow that from happening than keep paying for repairs and losing tons of credibility.

  1. few game disc read error VS Game Console completely DEAD
  2. a series of problems http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems + Xbox live issues now
  3. highest failure rate 33% in the history

Few game disk read errors? The Sony PS2 had so many, I had to send it in - on my dime! When I got my RROD, it wasn't the hardware so much as my son running past some cables and yanking it. And MS shipped me a box to send it back in.

And based on your comments, do you have any hands-on time with a 360, or is all just something you read online? And truthfully, I admire the way you have gleaned one thought into 3 excuses for the 360 problems. Wow ... you should consider a career in Public Relations!

Face it. You still don't want to admit Xbox 360 has so many issues, most of them are too serious that Microsoft can't just avoid it like Sony's one and need billions to cover it, completely DEAD, you know, even the Public Media like reporter & editor had to face this issue. I have a Xbox 360 myself, it got disc read error either(maybe different from sony's one), and it crashed with white screen while playing. So how about the scratched discs & the RROD I had on my Xbox 360, maybe you are the luckiest one, do you know how hard and how long it takes for me to replace a new one? Everyone knows that it is just damn slow for microsoft for replacing/repairing for a new one. How about the Xbox Live error that everyone's having recently, don't tell me it was a prank news or jokes?

The most important stuff that you should know, repairing doesn't mean the issues never happened. The problems will stay in the history whatever Microsoft did.

Even after the repair, the problems never tend to stop. What is the point of repairing, maybe it is Microsoft's strategy for buying another console. RRoD once, twice, third, forth and even more than that. We still can heard the story everyday, 33% is just too high even for a failling rate, if you consider the multiple times repairing, it should be higher.

Wake up, you really sound like a Microsoft PR, maybe you are, aren't you?

Macross, the DRE issues with PS2 were wide spread enough to warrant Sony to settle the class action lawsuit leveled against them. I was a victim of it and I didn't even have a launch PS2. Sony didn't send me a box and didn't offer me a free repair and told me it would be 6 to 8 weeks to fix it. The PS1's reliablity was even worse. I am not excusing MS' issues but at least they have handled it better than Sony. I didn't bring up the button or dead pixel issues on the PSP.

I'm just glad Microsoft gives a damn about there customers. I had an 360 from release date with no problems. But if I do, I can send it back with no problems. I know I'll get it back in a couple of weeks. My friend did have a problem and they sent him a box right away. He didn't have to wait long for it to come back and when it did.  It was a new one with the HDMI on the back.

The jury is still out on the Falcon. We won't know until it has been out for about year whether the failure rates have been reduced. It is unlikely that cooler chips will resolve all the hardware issues, but at least they may have been reduced to acceptable levels.

I enjoy reading whatever Gates has to say, it's always good for a few laughs.

They also added the extra sink and used screws to bolt down the mobo. Mobo warping was one of the main causes of RRoD.

But you're right, time will tell if it worked or not though so far, so good. With the old design, some units were failing within hours or days of purchase. We haven't been hearing those kinds of stories for months now.
