I thought game recording was CPU intensive? Or is that just a Fraps thing?

It all uses RAM... it has to buffer and ish.

Fraps, cause it's done in software - PS4 has hardware video encoder.

I'm guessing it's some ultra efficient codec similar to h.264 - heavy on encoding, but small file sizes (around 35-40MB for 1min of video @720p). Might not even be buffered to RAM, but to HDD.

C'mon people. Look at all its doing in the background and really think about it.

Playing game in foreground. (utilizing nearly all CPU and GPU)

background using 2nd processor....

HD Video streaming (game)
Audio streaming (game)
Video streaming (friend)
Audio streaming (friend)
HD Video recording
text/sms based messaging
friend notifications
downloading / content management

This is equivalent to running:
Battlefield 3 in an online match while video skyping with a friend AND having google up in the background refreshing chat and emails etc AND running your torrent downloads on a PC.

Yes it will all be more optimized to the hardware than Windows is, but it still requires a lot of ram for states, buffering, etc. Even WiiU which does almost none of that simultaneously with a running game, uses 1GB. PS4 will be doing all of that while the game is fully running and loaded.

This is why I changed it from .5 to 1GB for OS to 1GB+ for OS. Its going use a lot of RAM.

I just know Fraps uncompressed files are huge.  Talking +35G's for my 1080p 30fps 10 min WoW videos, compressed tho we talkin barely 1 GB tho.

@bluefalcon... which is why I think PS4 has always been 8GB.... 4GB for OS and background stuff (its pretty intensive) and 4GB for games. (see my other thread on that theory)

4GB is a lot just for OS and background stuffs... you can run Windows 8 plus zillion of apps with 4GB memory.

I think it's more like 2GB OS + 6GB Game.

Try playing a game while recording live video in HD and running skype in Windows with 2GB OS.

My cell phone do that with 512MB RAM.... 1080p video record while I'm doing a videoconference call.

Anyway the game is suposed to use the other 6GB... and the record video was made by another CPU.

Yes they are, cause Fraps needs to encode in real time on CPU - and they are not very good at that. If you have dedicated hardware for real-time encoding, files we'll be much smaller, and you don't stress CPU.

Its not while playing a game.
