How does a company "deserve" to be on top?

Especially a company that force fed you proprietary formats that you did not even want (Cell, BluRay), made you pay for them with an outrageous price point, lost all of your information to hackers not once, but possibly twice, blatantly ripped off the competition, failed to even care about one of its platforms (PSP), and who is now, finally starting to get things right with the Vita, when they announce you will not even be able to boot up some games if you did not buy one of their overpriced proprietary formats all over again.

This was all in the span of 5 years too

sony always has the leading format on there system the ps2 sold so well because it was a cheap dvd player and sony had to push blu ray so they put it in the ps3 and look now? blu ray and hd is everywhere and all because of sony.

and sony started of cocky at the start of the gen and what happened this gen was a big wake up call to sony and because of that they are the better of 3 companys.

and would you rather a company like nintendo on top (i love nintendo) who doesn't care for the hardcore audience

or microsoft who buys the competition and charges you for an online service that should be free and forcing devolopers to bow down to them

out of the 3 sony is the most humble

Im sure you know this, because its been said hundreds of times.

The PS2 is massively undertracked here. By something like 8 Million.

It's overtracked.

September NPD, Nintendo and NPD announced the DS sold 50 million and became the best selling video game platform in America, ever.

VGC lists the PS2 at 56 million in the US.

VGC "Americas" isn't just the US. It's North and South America. I really wish they would do a thing with the Americas charts similar to EMEAA charts, where we could see different countries/areas seperately. Would be cool.

Well DS is more casual than PS2. Casual gamers tend to buy less games.

For example, Wii and 360 are probably not that far apart in software sales when you exclude massive bundling Wii has had.

For what its worth though, I bet Nintendo made a lot more money on DS software than Sony made on PS2 software.

That's unpossible. Piracy is rampant on PS2 and it killed the software sales.

the ps2 is king :) greatest console of all time it was truely the time where playstation ruled the world i hope sony can regain it's top spot on the console throne because they deserve it the most

If they really "deserved it" the most as you say, then they would have it right now :P

Blu ray isn't as big as you think. DVD still holds about half the market. Digital services, rentals, and piracy are hurting sales of physical movies period.

Giving Sony credit for HD is ridiculous.

Why should online gaming be free? It cost publishers/developers a lot of money to offer those services. Little known fact, Sony actually charges them bandwith fees which is part of the reason PSN offers less content. Sony themselves said they lose money on PSN. PSN Plus is clearly an effort to change that.

MS actually saves publishers money by covering the fees of online services.

Developers bow to all console manufactures. Its not the PC world where developers can do whatever they want.

Honestly I think this depends on whether Nintendo keeps DS around. PS2 was on the market over ten years and is still going strong in foreign markets. DS on the other hand is beginning to peter out. If Nintendo gets the DS into Africa and the Middle East and other parts of Asia (more so then it is) then Nintendo could potentially surpas PS2. However I think the PS2 software sales are pretty dang impressive and it would take Nintendo another year or two of selling software and expanding into other markets to catch up.

Personally I don't think Nintendo will put in the effort. They will settle for the hardware record and the first party software sales which were far more profitable for Nintendo then Sony's. Fact is Nintendo turned a larger profit off DS then Sony did PS2 and with more hardware and such their is no reason for Nintendo to waste resources trying to completely wipe out Sony's records!

In fact I think it would be childish for Nintendo to go after Sony's last record with PS2. Let Sony have that one big record DS is big enough no reason to steal that from Sony. It would be an expensive and difficult feit for Nintendo to do and not beneficial enough in its out come!

The PS2 outshipped the DS last quarter and it's still ahead in total sales.
