Forums - Nintendo Discussion - IF Saturn is coming to Virtual Console...

Thinking about it ... it is actually very likely that a lot of Saturn games were under 100MB on their discs and simply zipping (or using another compression algorithm) on the disc images could dramatically reduce the size of the game to a more reasonable level.

if it came they will use the shoulder buttons the classic controller has alot of shoulder buttons

but i really would like for them to add DC but i doubt that will happen

There's a bigger problem than that: how big saturn games were. Ninty's console just have 512MB of onboard memory and there's no way that a Saturn game can fit into it.
Not unless they provide an external HDD.

You say that there are 6 face buttons on the Saturn controller, but I don't remember having any shoulder buttons, so GC and Classic controller will be just fine since they have each 4 face buttons + 2 shoulder buttons, making a total of six.

Well, games on the Playstation and Saturn didn't use much of the CD's storage space for the actual game assets and most of the storage space was used on uncompressed video and audio. Now it is theoritically possible to modify games so that you could take advantage of DivX and MP3 but that would (probably) require some effort from the companies who initially developed the game.

Even if that and what bdbdbd says is correct (compressing games to 100MB), the storage space that the Wii has is less than enough to keep 3-4 games at once erasing or transferring to SD all the rest.

Let's face it: if another console, such as Saturn, comes to VC, NIntendo need to put some more space onto the Wii with a HDD

Well, just like Happy Squrriel said, most of the games didn't use the full disc, so i think they aren't so much of a problem. But what i originally tried to say, that it is possible to bring Saturn games to VC. Is it practical, is a whole different matter. But i would say that file sizes less than 200MB would make Saturn games possible in practice, but not necessarily practical. The demand for HDD seems to be so high, that i don't think Nintendo can much longer keep pushing back with HDD release. @Patjuan: Actually it was Angel Studios (which is one of Rockstar studios today) who made the RE2 port and the RE2 didn't take 2 full CD:s, but the idea was made clear.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Saturn games on VC. There are just too many hurdles to overcome, including how complex the system was, the size of the games, and the limitations of the console. Really, Saturn emulation still hasn't been perfected by amatures while every system on VC is easy to emulate almost perfectly. Add that to the fact that it's not only a lot of data to store on the system but also a lot more data to send over the internet (upwards of 20x bigger than the largest game they sell for $10) and you can see why this isn't likely anytime soon. I'd expect to see it, but not until about 2009, and in the meantime we'll likely get GB/GBC, SMS, 32X, and Atari onboard.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Hudson do it for TurbographX CD games and I don't think they spend much doing it ( most of the cost should come from translation in English ).

Saturn (as well as Dreamcast and most other Sega consoles) has been on GameTap (http://www.gametap.com) for a long time.

The only thing I can tell you is that Saturn is pretty hard to emulate so I'm not so sure it can be done on a Wii.

PS: You can request me (using VGC's mail system) a free 3-month pass to GameTap

Is the Wii powerful enough to emulate the Saturn? I know it is head and shoulders above it graphics wise, but as ChichiriMuyo said it's a bitch to emulate. This is the best emulator you can get - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSF_(emulator) and it requires a dual core cpu to run properly.

Edit: The saturn has 6 face, 2 shoulder and a start button, for all those wandering.

Not happening unless Nintendo release a Hard Drive.

Add me for Pokemon, New Leaf, and Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 8.

krik,

The engineers who programmed the games for the Saturn would surely understand how to emulate those games. Besides the Engineers at Nintendo and the Engineers at Saga/ Sammy could come up with a solution to emulate the Saturn games using the VC.
