From the chart so far, it looks like 3DS is going to do better than DS in their first year, considering the fact that DS has already got their holiday big boost and 3DS hasn't.

Gap closes by alot but 3DS comes on top.

I Hate to use the same excuse why the PS3 lags so much behind than the PS2 in terms of sale but here it is.  The 3DS despite much better technology than any gaming handheld out there right now sold at a price close to twice that when the original DS came out!!!  It also didn't have a Mario game at launch and as such suffered initially like many consoles without mario at launch
