Don't be sad nintendo is giving us 20 free game :)

Nintendo Network ID: Sherlock99

Ok so basically i get 20 games free on E-shop.... Is that also for European buyers?

Ok i've calmed down a bit :P It's a good move by Nintendo, and I see that they believe they've screwed up big time. $250 for absolutely no reason was a bad move... now i can see why Pokemon Scramble got delayed till August 11. Great move by Nintendo imo

The future will be interesting indeed, cheaper than the PSP hmm.

Don't you think that there is more to the 3DS debacle than meets the eye? Something like a now truly and palatable rejection of portable consoles, at least in the West by both industry and media. In Nintendo's case aggravated by a third-party publishers boycott, and I don't like conspiracy theories but in this case is what a honestly beleive after years of witnessing the market.

There is no rejection of portable consoles per se, there only is a rejection of portable consoles that try to be home consoles. If Nintendo wants the 3DS to be successful, then they better emulate the DS instead of the PSP. The market didn't change, but Nintendo did.

This price cut is only the first step to correct the 3DS. Now the games need to follow suit. This won't happen this year, but it's possible to make it happen next year. The question is if Nintendo really wants to save the 3DS or if they rather want to make Gamecube games.

If history showed us anything, it's that they would rather make GC games at all costs, even at the cost of destroying their game series, than to save the 3DS. Sure, they cut the price, which was overdue ever since it's launch, but there's serious doubt they want to make the correct games as well. Only when they'll be in deep shit will they actually do anything meaningfull, so we'll probably have to wait until a few months after the Wii U launch.

Also, naming the mario game "super mario 3D land" just feels as though they're trying to make it seem like a "successor" to super mario land 1&2. As though a 3D mario can be a successor to 2D mario. Only way they could have made this stand out is if they had called it "super mario land 3D", but then it would sound like a super mario land remake in 3D.

Oh my, I hope they don't really call Mario Kart 3DS "Mario Kart 7".

Mario Kart: Fly and Dive

Yeah... I guess it could be worse.

Now if Nintendo actually had New Super Mario Bros. 3DS scheduled for November, then the 3DS would have a monster holiday season. But with the news of this price cut at least one serious 3DS issue has been properly addressed now.

Why the mad mouthing of Diddy Kong Racing? There you could fly and the game was better than Mario Kart 64 (at least in single player)

So will we get an English confirmation and list of these 20 free games? I need to weigh if I should buy this thing before the deadline lol.

Well it's also posted on Nintendo's website in the US (I haven't checked other regions) Although they don't have a definitive list of what will be available.

Great Price, Great Games

An exciting message for people who own a Nintendo 3DS and those who want to:

Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the suggested retail price of its portable Nintendo 3DS™ system to $169.99 in the United States. The new price takes effect Aug. 12 and makes an outstanding value even better.

Building on the popularity of The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, which launched June 19, the upcoming game calendar for Nintendo 3DS is a Who's Who of iconic video game franchises. Star Fox 64™ 3D arrives on Sept. 9, followed by Super Mario™ 3D Land in November, Mario Kart™ 7 in December and Kid Icarus™: Uprising during the holiday season.

And don't forget that Nintendo 3DS has a bunch of fun features, including Nintendo Video™, the Nintendo eShop and access to Netflix, that make it a must-have video game system.

But what about the 830,000 of you who already own a Nintendo 3DS? You're some of Nintendo's most loyal customers, and we're rewarding you for getting in on the action early with not one, not 10, but 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop! Here's how it works:

The 20 free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:

1. Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi's Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

More details about this program will be announced in the future.

It's a great time to own a Nintendo 3DS!

OK, now I don't feel quite so badly burned. In the above link, Nintendo is basically apologizing to early adopters for this "unprecedented" (in Nintendo's history) of a hardware price drop so shortly after release. They explain that current market conditions are quite different from before they released the 3DS, and therefore making this price cut now is the best way to ensure that the system is accepted widely as the successor to the DS. However, they also don't want to damage their relationship and trust with early adopters.

So, they are implementing a "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program". To take advantage of this program, you must have connected to the 3DS e-shop at least once before 11:59pm 10 August (the day before the price cut takes affect). Anyone who has done so will be automatically registered in the Ambassador Program.

(The following is my partial translation of the information from the above link, and while I believe it to be accurate it is not guaranteed free of error. If I notice or am made aware of mistakes, I will edit accordingly.)

Benefits of the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program

Starting 1 September, 10 NES Virtual Console games will be available free of charge. Available titles will include the following:

Super Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong Jr.
Ballon Fight
Ice Climbers
The Legend of Zelda

These titles were originally scheduled to be released before the end of the year at the time the NES Virtual Console for the 3DS was announced/released. These titles will be released in advance (in their current state) for the Ambassador Program, and then updates will be available (again free of charge) once they are released again for everyone with the NES Virtual Console.

Further, before the end of the year 10 GBA Virtual Console titles will be available free of charge. Available titles will include the following:

Super Mario Advance 3
Mario Kart Advance
Metroid Fusion
Made in Wario
Mario vs. Donkey Kong

At this time, these titles are not scheduled for general release, and are being provided only to early adopters as part of the Ambassador Program.

Hell yeah i'll rebuy some of those for free. The NES titles should be so insignificant in file size that it won't matter, though i still have all those GBA games except Wario Ware and Mario vs Donkey Kong

though we'll see if NoA emulates this or what exactly they'll do

As for myself, this isn't unprecedented. I think the original iPhone actually had a drastic price-cut quicker than this that burnt launch adopters out of some $200
