Also it's worth noting they learned from Wii price cut failure and got lot more aggresive this time.
If Wii price cut were more effective I'm pretty sure we would see only $50 price cut.

So...is this short-term or long-term?

The reason is obvious- they had the margin in hand and used it to get the money, now they're cutting the price so it's 1/2 that of the Vita to steal the sales, and Sony can't compete. With a year of games as well, the 3DS seems like a must-buy for most over the Vita...

What do you mean short term or long term?

I.E is it just for a few weeks or is it a new RRP? (Turns out it is. It was too early when I wrote that :p ) As for the Vita reaction, other consoles have had early price cuts, and the DS was hardly tearing up the sales charts at launch...I feel this could really damage Vita. It's not so straightforward now there's a 10,000y difference.. The games? Look up.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

The Vita has its own share of problems to deal with. Don't let yourself be fooled by the people who play it up and pretend that Uncharted is in the same league as a 3D Super Mario game.

Don't you think that there is more to the 3DS debacle than meets the eye? Something like a now truly and palatable rejection of portable consoles, at least in the West by both industry and media. In Nintendo's case aggravated by a third-party publishers boycott, and I don't like conspiracy theories but in this case is what a honestly beleive after years of witnessing the market.

The games are just for people who already have the 3DS, not for people buying after the price cut.

If they advertise well this could make 3DS sales skyrocket. I'm still suprised they sold it for so much in the first place, but at least they relised their mistake.

Sony is doomed!

Yeah, there's one thing you have to give Nintendo credit for: When they make a mistake they do have the balls to admit it.

At a $169 price point the 3DS should be extremely hard to catch for the Vita. Super Mario 3D Land is not a 2D Mario game but it is still a bigger seller than any Vita exclusive at this point. The same goes for Mario Kart.

And it also gets my hopes up for the WiiU launch - I was extremely worried about the price but I guess they won't go above $299 now.

Also it's suspicious they called the Mario game "Mario 3D Land". Iwata is probably forcing Miyamoto to make Super Mario Bros. Mii ready for the WiiU launch now.

So... any guesses when Iwata will publicly announce Brain Training 3D, Tomodachi Collection 2 and New Super Mario Bros. 3D?

Oh dear, that's pretty...competetive pricing right there. Now only release some epic software for it and we're all set.
I have a feeling that it will be its last price cut though (at least until eventual revision). I can't imagine going lower than that...

Nice. I'd always planned on picking one up later this year, this has just cemented that for me.

Wow, this is a super price cut indeed! I'm glad Nintendo has finally come to their senses and will be resolving one of problems for the 3ds. I've been happy with my 3ds especially since more games have been releasing lately (I bought One Piece, Zelda and Tales of the Abyss in the past 1-2 months), but for others the price has been a real breaker. With even more games releasing and this price cut alongside it, the 3ds is sure to pick up some steam. (Plus they didn't shaft all the early adopters by giving us some free games!)

The price of the 3ds will now be cheaper than the PSP! 3ds will be 15,000 yen and the PSP's price is 16,800 yen. Not to mention what the Vita's price will be once it releases. A 10,000 yen price differential will be huge. Sony looked like geniuses when they announced Vita at the same price point as the 3ds, but now...
