Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The problem with modern video games summed up in one review

I fully agree. He is part of the lowest common denominator in gaming, and the lowest common denominator in any entertainment business are the tone deaf/noobs/etc. types of people.

Of course when someone makes entertainment for the lowest common denominator, they will sell a lot, but to the people who have been part of the medium for a while the product will be complete and utter crap. Gaming is no exception.

I agree with the reviewer, Ocarina of Time was a bitch to play, I would often have to look at guides and say "How the fuck was I supposed to know that?!" You need to do the most stupid and time consuming thing to move forwards in the game, the lack of story or narration means that once you complete a dungeon, you have no idea where to go next, it's frustrating and it wastes time, he has every right to complain.

I agree that most games these days feel like they are holding you hand and you can't do anything for yourself, but Ocarina of Time was a pisstake in this aspect, it's the reason why I put down the game and refused to play it.

I do miss these types of games, ones that let you work everything out for yourself, but if I wanted a game like that, I would play Tomb Raider or Resident Evil.

The onl problem with any recent zelda was getting in the turtle rock thing in link to the past.

Also I don't think you have been playing much TR or RE, because the most recent ones were jsut as shitty games.

I agree... WAAAY too casual and there is a setting on every game that you can make it so easy a child can finish it.

Even games like LA Noir, EVERY time you pick up an item that needs to be examined more closely the stupid pop up comes up telling you how to examine it more closely!

I got it after 2 tries, let ME figure out if I need to examine it more closely instead of YOU!

UGH!

And the worst part is LA Noir purports to be an adventure game. I remember back in Resident Evil where you had to go over every item with a fine tooth comb to figure everything out.

Yep those were the days.  That's why games like Demons Souls are such a rare and beautiful gem these days.

I don't like the "casual" connection, as I think this trend came about in all games, even the "hardcorz" games. I more blame the overall trend of game developers going after a "cinema experience" where a game MUST be completed for it to make any sense or be fun, because you have to see the cutscenes and such, so the developers go out of their way to make sure you get through the game.

And here we have the correct answer.

In order to make people see the developers' vision, the game absolutely has to be made in a way that it can be completed. The gamer getting lost or minding his own business is not the purpose of the majority of modern video games, it's about experiencing a storyline rather than playing a game.

In other words, modern video games are often about the developers showing off how great they are which requires the game to be easy to finish, instead of allowing the player to be great.

I can only concentrate on the game, if the game is difficult enough. If it's too easy and straightforward, I can easily mind my own business while playing it and even forget about the storyline.

Around the Network

Gameplay and game development has really changed over the years. It used to be that almost any game you could spend countless hours trying to solve puzzles, mysteries, and how to defeat certain enemies and bosses. Now a days you can play about 80% of the games that take less than 6 hours to beat. And I really think boss fights have gotten a ton easier in most games. Can I get an Amen?

I also think though that the most recent crowd of gamers are used to games being more fast paced and hint filled now. Think of it from this point of view:

1. Developers and publishers are all about making profit. The best way to do that is make the game as enjoyable as possible with the least amount of programming possible so that it can get out the door fast and earn the company profits on its sales. Many game developers rely more on faster and faster production of their games. They very rarely now make a game that have so much encapsulated into one gaming experience.

2. Most gamers now want a game that they can run through quickly to get the experience, defeat a big boss at the end and complete it within a few days so that they can move on to the next experience in a different game. People are also much more fast pace now and it relates into gaming as well. Most gamers just simply want a quick compelling story....I think this is where the definition between totally hardcore gamer and Casual/somewhat hardcore gamer gets blurry. Some of the Major hardcore gamers want to play games that have tons of exploration, adventure, unlocks, and time consuming. They want to be totally immersed in a game for months like it used to be back in the 80s and early 90s when all tasks seemed to take more time. Gaming now days has a much larger casual crowd and most games have just naturally gotten shorter.

So in all it seems todays world is more fast paced, and there are a lot of gamers that want their games to be fast paced so that they can experence the next adventure in a new game quickly. I for one have likes for both types of games. I love the in depth games that force you to solve puzzles and complete tasks on your own. It makes me feel like I have accomplished more and overcome more. But also I like to play some games that take me quickly through a story and quickly comes to an end, because I want to experience other games that have fresh stories and new challenges. Its a mix of both for me.

I was talking about the first ones on the Playstation.

Resident Evil 5 wasn't great, but I don't mind the newest Tomb Raiders by Crystal Dynamics.

Which jsut goes back to the point of this. New age gamers seem to suffer from mental diseases because even old franchises have to be dumbed down to become popular.
