Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Pictures Hacked, Over 1 Million Accounts Stolen

Unfortunately many of you do not understand how the internet operates. I am sorrry, but I am not going to write a book to explain everything even in a general sense. Needless to say not only would it be nearly impossible to wrangle the net by any single government, but it would actually have a massively negative economic impact. You don't have to worry about a government crackdown. Even making the suggestion is purely ludicrous. Though I find it hilarious that Sony getting hacked ten times is what is supposed to make it happen. You know and not the tens of thousands of hacks that have taken place in the last decade.

Speaking to millions of innocent victims. Can we please cut the shit. These attacks aren't really hacks for profit. They fall into a couple categories. Hacks for lulz, and political hacks. In both cases they are looking to humiliate Sony. To cause Sony to lose money, reputation, and customers. Sorry folks Sony is the only real victim here. The rest of us are just learning a couple valuable lessons. One Sony isn't to be trusted with personal information, and frankly you probably shouldn't buy a device from them that will access their network. Second you shouldn't reuse passwords.

Honestly I really cannot even begin to fathom what some of you are thinking. Sony has proven the extraordinary fact that they are inept, reckless, and going down in flames. With all this you guys want to hitch a ride with them. Seriously your problem isn't how horribly bad people these hackers must be. The problem is that your cuddling up to their very easy target. The hackers keep screaming at you to jump off, and they keep making the point over and over. Eventually they are going to get tired of your I love the Sony crap, and aren't going to give a shit about destoying you while getting at Sony. They have only copied files so far. They haven't even reached inside of their bag of tricks for their most beloved items. You know viruses and trojans. How are you going to feel when these guys walk through the obvious crack Sony security, and place a virus in the patcher for PSN, and a few days later your console bricks out on you.

Look guys your playing with fire now. What ten times isn't enough to get the point across. These aren't super master hackers. They say so themselves they are doing this using what amounts to childrens toys. Sony has fallen for this very same gag what four or five times now. Over a couple weeks seriously this hasn't clicked home for them yet. What do you guys think will happen when someone really fucking dark comes around the bend. Someone who isn't going to have a problem with actually using malicious programming, or these hacking groups start to compete against on another to see which one can do the most harm.

No I am not being cruel about this. Look it isn't going to go away, and frankly it is probably going to get much worse. While I am not a fan of everyone here. I definitely don't want to see all of you getting taken unawares. I just want you to really think how you will feel if they do something real bad to you. Your not exactly in a position to protect yourself here, and the guys in charge of that make the Three Stooges look like nobel prize winners. This is looking less and less like a feel good story, and more like a dark horror movie. You know where the monster wins in the end.

That's a terrible excuse. Hackers often use smaller sites as gateways to access other resources. So at this point, Sony should have had all their properties go through a thorough security review to prevent such a situation.

I doubt these web servers have high priority access to other Sony servers, people probably just FTP new files and data over to it.

That said, yes it was a terrible excuse, it might be true. I'm not saying Sony aren't in the wrong here for not securing their data, they are, it shows incompetence. But I do not agree with the way we discovered how this information about them not securing passwords was obtained. No matter how bad Sony might be in this case, the hackers are far far worse for illegally hacking into servers and publishing data.

Hmm, pie.

1) It will die down. It always does.

2) Sony have many, many websites. Don't you think it is unreasonable for them to update the security on all of them in such a short space of time?

3) Consumers are being harmed here, just as much as Sony are. Not being able to play online for a month, and developers losing vital revenue that could be needed for future games.

Yes, Sony did have poor security across all its networks. We've all learnt that. With each hack, we don't exactly learn that anymore. We get the point, the security was crap, now they are fixing it. They will fix, believe you me. And once the 'coolness' of hacking Sony dies away, we will be left with a platform with a secure network.

Come Again?

Try debating my points instead, ok? I really don't take kindly to people slinging crap on the interweb who do not know me.

You have been very, very wrong before - and you are wrong here I'd say. Please, don't take your word as fact, because nobody else here does.

Around the Network

10,000 accounts stolen, with very little more information than you could get off a users facebook account.

Pretty unimpressive. Provided credit card details aren't taken I don't think anyone's liable to care too much.

@ Slowmo.

I'm still waiting for you to explain to me why:

1) Sony will be continually hacked for years to come

2)You think Sony could have thoroughly updated all of their websites in a month or so

3)Consumer's have not been hurt

4) We won't be left with secure Sony networks.

..Or an apology would suffice.

For a start, you say they aren't victims. The information in the PSN hack was taken, and sold to god knows who - that makes them victims. Also the information here was given out, to whoever wants it, in the case of 12,500 accounts, and they also offered instructions for those who wanted to simply take what they wanted from Sony Pictures servers, everyone who has details on that server is potentially a victim.

As for these hacks, it's not just Sony they could target, Lulsec just got done with PBS, and Square Enix had loads of user data stolen from them too. Point is it's not just Sony that need to take a hard look at their security and the hackers, warning consumers away from Sony specifically is just an attempt to intentionally harm Sony's PR. Hardware and Software sales however suggest this hasn't worked in the slightest, yet... so there are still plenty of resentful hackers out to try and cause damage.

There are no arguments against that, because they are right.  Sony's been in the media more because of the Geohot case coupled with the PSN hack and the drastic actions Sony did to confront the hack.  However, there are still hacks going on that don't catch as much attention because the focus is on Sony.  And in a few years the hackers will find another company they hate when they realise they really can't take Sony down this way.  Or when they realise that Sony was the only one actually trying to give them a more open platform to begin with.  Oh who am I kidding, they'll never realise that.

Yeah. I know, eh? They only have 2 guys updating their numerous servers and websites.
