Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why did Gamecube get served???

Aside from SSBM and the Prime games, there was no reason to get a gamecube when you had an N64.

Every timeless Nintendo classic that the Nintendo 64 had except melee, the gamecube had an inferior version of. Looking back at it, it was a bland and dissapointing console.

Nintendo chose to make the wrong software for it.

I love the GC it gave me games like WW, Pikmin, Metroid, DK jungle beat and RE4 and the other RE games but it did not have a very good Mario kart game and even mario sunshine was not that good (nothing compared to Galaxy though better than a lot of other games on other consoles) but it sure had some of the best games out there.

The problem then was that people were always oh it is a kiddy console and trying to be all mature and cool so they went with the trend and did not buy one. After all it was purple and cool people don’t buy purple stuff as it is kiddy and some might even say it was gay :P

It had no mature content no matter how you looked at it was only for kids even the RE games and Metroid and all the other mature content were for kids back then!

And it was purple!!

seriously? you sound like a middle schooler ahahahahahhahaha

I think, at least some of it, was due to the competition pushing and advertising their systems at this time with much more muscle and money. Nintendo was a little late to the party realizing that games had become main stream and could be marketed that way. I know when I worked for EB and the Xbox launched, Microsoft seemed to put WAY more money behind advertising, and promo's and buying prime shelf space, etc...

I bought a gamecube and got rid of my Xbox after a couple months, so advertising isn't everything, but it probably had a lot to do with people choosing competitors over the Big N in that generation.

And I like purple, it's royal!

A lot of 3rd party devs shunned Nintendo, cuz Nintendo was kind of crappy to everyone prior, especially with the previous gen of the disc based ps1 and the cartridge based n 64. It took the GameCube for Nintendo to realize they have to play nice with 3rd party devs.

Smaller selection of 3rd party games to choose from, a "cartoonish" Zelda to turn away some zelda fans, and you got yourself a fiasco.

Sadly, many people missed out on one of the best games ever - Eternal Darkness.

Do you guys realize there was two other colors beside purple. Got the platinum one myself. You guys made alot of good points, but i like Luigi's Mansion (more than Sunshine) and I still think MK DD is the best in the series (the extra character adds more strategy and separates it from the others) and who could forget Mario Power Tennis, i still play that. For me personally I thought that the exclusives were good enough to get one. Plus i got all my multiplats for it as they ran better than the PS2 ones. Spider-man, Soul Calibur2, Sonic Heroes, etc.  Maybe becaue i had such low expectations when i got it, i was surprised how much I liked it.

Didnt have support Nintendo was a big bully to third party develepors with the snes and n64 ppl just didnt want to make games for them anymore it did have great games like paper mario melee and sunshine

Sunshine is my fav 3d mario to bad it dint do well

It still blows my mind no one has made another horror game as close to awesome as Eternal Darkness. I'm with ya on that one! Nothing scared me more in a video game then when that game would randomly not let me save, or say my file was corrupt and I'd have to restart the game, not to mention the bugs crawling across the screen....damn I may go play it now!

I honestly don't see why there is so much hate with gamecube's first party titles. If it wasn't for the sheer briliance of mario galaxy, I would consider them much much better then wii's first party titles.

Mario Kart Double Dash is much better then mario kart wii, almost equal to mario kart 64.

SSBM is the best super smash bros period.

Super Mario Sunshine is a big weakness as both mario 64 and mario galaxy are much better. It was still a great game though.

Metroid Prime very different style of the previous metroids so can't be compared, but was in my opinion the best gamecube game and as a  single player game has not been matched by any first person adventure yet.

Legend of Zelda Wind Waker was a pretty different style from previous 3d zeldas and was very good. Twilight Princess proved that the typical 3d zelda formula was starting to grow stale. Wind Waker was unique and a much better zelda then twilight princess.

Animal Crossing series has now grown stale as well. When released for the gamecube it was one of the most addicting games around.

Pikman brought about fun rts style gameplay that wasn't a pain to play for the first time on consoles.

It was a failure, saleswise, due to lack of third party support, and lack of casual appeal. Kids didn't want what looked like a console for babies. Casual players wouldn't be interested with most of the games other then animal crossing and mario kart. The original purple only color made it an ugly addition to a living room. Its first party offering was fine though.
