Forums - Sony Discussion - Be Honest Did you really buy a 599$ system just to install linux?..

I remember the early days of this gen, before this site became overrun by PS fanboys. Upset by the slow sales of the PS3 there would be multiple threads per month as to why PS3 was better than XBOX. Other than Wifi,BR, free online and people would ALWAYS mention Linux.

For me since they removed otherOS I have boycotted buying any Sony or Playstation stuff..........except Yakuza. Its bullshit any way you look at it.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I put homebrew on my Wii and haven't pirated any games.  Just used it to play DVD's and download some fan made stuff.  Not all the people on the homebrew scene are pirates.

I use homebrew/hacks on every system i have the chance, on the PSP my main use is to dump my UMDs into the memory stick to play with less noise, more battery and faster loading times, on my PS1 and PS2 it was to play foreign games that never got here (a chinese friend brought those) and use backups to do less damaging on my CDs/DVDs, on my Wii to play DVDs, fan stuff, launch apps via TCP, etc., and now on my PS3 i'm looking forward for my removed Linux support, a better video player, fan stuff, use backups (like i did with PS1, PS2 and PSP), etc.

I'm noticing some people saying that SONY made the first move by removing linux... Which isn't the case..

SONY removed linux after the first Geohot hack was released to the public. They then issued an apology stating that they hoped they would never have to remove another feature. Then came the jailbreak dongle which later lead to removed support for a number of 3rd party peripherals.

If you want to see people who bought it ONLY because of the linux feature, you have to go to the research facilities etc., where people use the incredible processing power the PS3 offers to make PS3 cluster supercomputesr.

For everyone else, Linux was a feature like Blu-Ray: People love it, but they wouldn't buy the device ONLY because of the Blu-Ray feature.

Oh man, I remember those days too. Funny how things have changed.

I almost feel like looking up the old "ps3 is uncrackable" threads too.

Lol i knew someone is going to mention "TEH CELL", The cell is very outdated by now, they can get a much better PC for less than 599$ and its going to have much much better proccesor than the PS3.

Well, its no longer $599, so your philosophy is wrong.  I don't know that there is higher floating points for $299.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

i know, my point that its not a "incredible supercomputer" anymore, since there is already PCs that are much more powerful at low costs.

I paid $599 US DOLLARS for genji like every other true sony fan

Demon's Souls Official Thread  | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka

I paid $599 for the awesome feature of being able to install Linux that I would never actually use, but was sure glad it was there until those bastards at SCE took away my right to choose not to install Linux and instead made it so I couldn't install Linux.

I want my $599 back for my God Given Right of being able to choose not to install Linux on my PS3 anymore.
