Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Should I get Mass Effect if I don't like shooters

I really don't like Shooters on consoles at all.  That's the way it is, and yes I have given it all the tries I could.

I love RPGs.  Do you think I will like Mass Effect or is it very heavy in the FPS element?

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Yes it is quite heavy in the FPS genre, however you can use alot of things to make it more RPG based.

The moves are awsome and give you a variety of chocies to use. But yes it is FPS first.

However the strong story is what is compelling about mass effect and if you want a strong story game then it doesnt get much better

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I wouldn't call it a FPS but if you don't enjoy real time combat and aiming than Mass Effect definitely isn't the game for you.

In a lot of ways I'd compare it to Oblivion, you've got to aim at your targets but if something is too difficult you can always fall back on the classic RPG elements of level grinding (if you choose easy mode otherwise bosses are scaled to your level) and picking up equipment and add-ons.

It has a lot of RPG elements but it's still very much a shooter too. If the shooter elements were better done I would say give it a go but the fact is the shooter side of the game wasn't done great and you'll more than likely end up getting frustrated at how slow your character is and how fast the enemies are.

If you really want to play, at least put it on the easiest setting and maybe you'll be able to get through it and enjoy the RPG elements of it.

Alright. Thanks for the input. I'll give it a rent when I'm done with all of my finals.

FPS? It has a Resident Evil 4 over the shoulder viewpoint in battle scenes, not a Halo/Doom First Person view...The more abilities I unlock, the more enjoyable the fighting is...I appreciate how the battle pauses when you select what power to use..It gives you a few precious seconds to form a battle plan...
If you love RPG's, you should love this one.. Can't wait to finish it so I can do it all over again!

Yes, it's very much like Oblivion. It's not a shooter at all in the way people talk about shooters (Halo/HL2). The combat is real time, yes; but it's much more an RPG than a shooter. You can also pause the gameplay to invoke many different commands (a la the KOTOR and Jade Empire). You'll spend the majority of the time talking to people, not fighting. Often times fighting can be avoided by the input/decisions you make in the game.

I wouldn't let the fact that you dislike FPS and TPS on consoles discourage you from trying the game, as this really isn't a shooter in that sense that I believe you dislike. The game is about much more than fighting, and there are other methods to fighting/powers you can use during battles other than the guns. I'd say definitely give a rent to see if it's your taste, but buy it if you like it. You'll want to have it for more than few days to truly get everything out of the game.

I think it kinda gets a bad rap for being a "shooter" even though you can play the game very many different ways, not just run and gunning it. It's very much an RPG where your powers, etc are very important to making progress in the game. It's most similar to Oblivion than anything, and so if you liked that, you'll enjoy Mass Effect (I think at least).

BRATZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
