Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is smart, and I hate them for that fact

Early next year I am going to play the second home console Zelda of this cycle, having already purchased (but not played) two portable console Zelda's this generation.

I have a Zelda backlog, pick enough franchise re-hash to complain about.  Across two platforms it looks like we'll have had four main series Zelda games this generation.  Don't begrudge Nintendo their remake when their market dominance is receeding, they're giving me an excuse to play OoT again.

I'm talking about the new remake of OoT. I've been around to numerous fansites and what do I see? People praising this game. Praising this re-release of a game we all played almost 15 years ago. It's fairly graphically updated sure, but since when did we all turn into graphics whores?

Nintendo knows they can make huge cash cow ports instead of putting real innovation and effort towards making a new game. They know it. It's true, and it's all because of all the fanboys' nostalgia for their beloved games.

How many ports of OoT have there been already? Why do some of you back up this game, back up Nintendo's laziness, when we could be getting new adventures and new gameplay from Nintendo?

Nostalgia. Nostalgia. Nostalgia. Go around to any site and you'll see countless fanboys creaming their pants over this game due to nostalgia. Nintendo knows this, and that's why Nintendo can be lazy and give us a coughed up 15 year old game.

I will never support this type of developer behavior.

How does everyone else here at VGC feel about this kind of developer behavior? I know there are at least a few fans on here who are going crazy with anticipation over this remake of OoT, and I want to ask you, why should we be excited for this? If you're  fan of OoT, haven't you played the game countless times already? Do you really want the same adventure, same gameplay that we have already been playing all these years? All because of slightly upgraded graphics? What else is there that I'm missing?

All I'm doing now is praying this isn't cutting at all into dev time for a real 3DS Zelda game - but I'm fairly sure it is. If someone can show me otherwise I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok, but why do you think people have such a passionate nostalgia for these types of games? Because they're REALLY good, better than many games today. I promise you people would not be nostalgic for a OOT remake if the original was terrible.

I agree completely with that and I understand that due to the quality of the original game and nostalgia, many gamers are overly pleased with this upgraded version of OoT. I just finished replaying OoT a few weeks ago. I love the game. But I don't want Nintendo putting so much effort into remaking it slightly upgraded when they could be doing something else with their resources and time.

But then we'll get into the debate of whether or not it is taking up a measurable amount of resources away from the real Zelda 3DS. And I've already gone through that with Khuutra.

At the end of the day, whether or not it is taking away from the Zelda 3DS resource-wise, I do whole-heartedly believe that it is making Nintendo wait longer to release the new Zelda 3DS game, for reasons I have stated in previous posts. That makes me sad. I want to see a new epic Zelda on this new next-generation Nintendo system. The Zelda series is my favorite series of all time.

But I won't get to see it for years most likely.

I can't really see the problem with a Zelda OOT remake, Since it is a classic and this new version might even include extra dungeons, better controls, etcetera. So the graphic update wouldn't even be the main addition to me and besides it's not like Nintendo themselves have remade all that many games the only one that does come to mind in the last decade is Mario 64 DS.

Putting in new dungeons would mean a change in the story. Are we talking about a graphically updated remake of OoT, or are we talking about a re-invisioning of OoT?

If this game is substantially different from OoT and changes up the pace of the game and the dungeons and story, then I don't even know if I'd call it OoT anymore since then it just about shares as much with the rest of the Zeldas.

But I would much prefer that.

Are you forgetting the concept of a bonuse dungeon?

Plus what if Rauru needs Link to prove he is worthy of that medallion?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I addressed "addon" dungeons with a later post. I articulated my thoughts with this response: "Meh."

=P

Now, if they add in a whole freakin new dungeon for the Light Medallion that Rauru gives us, I am going to admit my interest will shoot up 110% for this game. If it's an expansion and re-invisioning of OoT, I am so down for it. But I want the change to be substantial and game-changing enough to be fresh and create a new impact. Not just some fluffy fluff filler like we got for Super Mario 64.

(I am sorry if my opinion on SM64DS' bonus content offends anyone.)

I will get OoT3D if any new dungeons are added, if not I won't

I am skeptical. If nostalgia has been proven to sell as evidenced by the New Super Mario Bros. Wii (remake of New Super Mario Bros. DS) and others, then why would a company not pursue at least one remake or two?

How do you explain sequels? Sequels just as much as remakes sell because of nostalgia over the gameplay of their predecessor. You could not have had the success of Modern Warfare 2 without Modern Warfare. Without Half-life, there would be no Half-life 2. Looking at it in this regard, you have to hold sequels to the same standard as remakes because they are based off a previous iteration and only add a few new features without doing a complete 360 on the fundamental gameplay.

Myself, I hold no bias against remakes or sequels. I take them for what they are. Games made to recapture the phenomenon of the original.

wfz, I'll give you another good point to think about.

If Ocarina of Time is on the 3DS, then Nintendo has more reason to make a great new Zelda game. It's going to look pretty bad for them if OoT remains the best Zelda on the 3DS. Without OoT, any new 3DS Zelda would be the best Zelda on the system by default, but this way they have a benchmark to surpass.

But then they should put Wind Waker on the 3DS

Because that would mean the benchmark to be surpassed would be higher than that for OOT

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

People are happy about this release because it is the first handheld release of the greatest game ever made, and it has been touched up.

I would rather be angry with Nintendo if they continued to deprive me of Ocarina of Time, now that the hardware for a good release of it on a handheld system will finally be available.

If you want to be angry about other people getting cake, then it is really your own problem, and you won't get any sympathy here.

There are still people who actually think New Super Mario Brothers Wii is a remake of the DS game? Kinda funny =P

I'm just gonna post this...

OoT on the 3DS makes me a happy chap.

I liked the game, and if it sells well enough, it means we have the possibility of getting the superior Majora's Mask also upgraded and in 3D.

So yeah. This is good news for me.

Although I do like the bit where you go on about graphics whores
