Successors to the Wii and Xbox 360 are more likely to arrive before the release of the PlayStation 4, according to a top Sony exec.

In an exclusive interview with Develop, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said he imagined either Nintendo or Microsoft will jump first to the next generation of consoles.

Five years into the current console generation and the three big platform holders have decided against discussing future hardware. When asked why he thought this was, Yoshida said:

“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move.

“Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move.

“Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

The interview with Yoshida will be published tomorrow.

If so, Sony are more stupid that I thought. Here I was, thinking that perhaps this gen had taught them something.

I can't say if this is the right decision for Sony to make. Wouldn't PS4 be at a serious disadvantage by releasing after Microsoft and Nintendo?

It depends on hows big the PS3 is by the time the 720 and WII2 are released.

Maybe Sony wants to be in their own little generation, releasing the Ps4 a few years after the next gen starts. They probably see the PS3 still selling a lot by the time next gen starts. 

Such decisions would ultimately be made by Kaz, not Yoshida. I doubt Kaz would think launching late is a good idea, despite all their talk about how long the ps3 will stick around.

PS3 need to recoup at least some of its losses. I would be a disaster to pull the plug earlier.

But that may affect next gen sales, if true.

At least they moved from flat out calling the competition crap to being sneaky about it.

That quote is merely saying we're so much better better than the competition that we don't need to release anything yet, the others are outdated or will be very soon so they will and therefore are not a good investment."

It really doesn't matter if that's the actual case, they're just trying to make the PS3 sound as good as the Xbox 720 or Wii 2, whatever they may be.

for christ sake why are people calling the next xbox a 720? so the next xbox has to add another 360 number because the predicessors  had the number 360 .. im afraid when the next seccessor after the 720 the next one will be called the xbox 1000 lol
