Forums - Sales Discussion - Could DKCR become the top selling western developed game in Japan ever?

It is certainly possible. I think many are underestimating this game. Its like NSMB all over again. By no means do I think DKC will replicate NSMB success. But I do feel this will sell about as much as Brawl, maybe more. The original DKC was a solid 3m seller there. Why wouldn't this one approach those type of numbers?

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

A lot of Japanese Wii owners who bought their console for 2D platforming fun.

Enough to set a record? Maybe not. But we will see.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

^I assumed jarrod was joking, Kirby has never broken 2 million in Japan, even on DS or the original Gameboy (both of which were huge in Japan.)

I didn't mean to imply Kirby will break 2m... just that it'll sell more than DKCR in Japan.  I think Kirby will break a million, or come close to it though.  Not sure if DKCR will...

Piracy says no, it won't.

Piracy seems to be less of an issue for Wii in Japan.

Honest, I wonder how well it will sell period.

I love Retro and DK but I haven't seen anything to wow me about DKC Returns that will get it enough buzz to move big numbers like the original games. Heck, I'm worried that Nintendo will be banking to heavily on the nostalgia that when they drop DKCR it will land with a dud because they didn't give Retro enough incentive to go nuts on making it as fun and at the same time as original as the OG SNES classics.

I already preordered DKCR. When i saw it both me and my girl could not have been happier.

I agree with this which is that Kirby would do better than DKCR.

OP: This reminds me of how everyone said SO4 PS3 would sell better than 360 in Japan because ToV PS3 did so. I don't think NSMBW success can be directly applied to DKCR. I love to be proved wrong but right now I don't see it happen. Over 1 mil would be an amazing feat.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

That would make it the worst selling DKC of all, even DKC3 did well more than a million in Japan. DKC is bigger in Japan than Kirby (the lowest DKC sold more than the best selling Kirby game in Japan, when Kirby had the install base advantage), and NSMBW showed how much the Japanese love 2D multiplayer platformers.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

The later GB and GBA DKC games sold well below a million (most well below half a million even).  This wouldn't be the worst for the series, and honestly I just think Kirby will have more pull with the Japanese.

You're using handheld spin-offs and ports to determine how big DKC is in Japan....?

By the same token NSMB Wii shouldn't have been big, because Super Mario Advance sold less than a million there. Donkey Kong Country is clearly the bigger seller in Japan (and in general).

What are you talking about? The Famicom Mini version SMB1 even cleared a million and the original GB Marios each did millions.  Not to mention NSMB... Mario was HUGE on handhelds.  DK Land and the DKC ports... less so.

Rare's DKC games were a phenomenon, and considered leading edge in terms of visuals.  Right games at the right time... honestly, I just don't see a throwback like DKCR having the same sort of impact in Japan.  Meanwhile, I think Kirby will do as consistently well as he always seems to.
