Forums - Sony Discussion - The PSP and America WTF

The DS owns North America. I don't know why people don't buy it in South America. Oh wait, is it even for sale down there? If so, than it needs a price cut.

the DS "owns" the entire planet.

the reason the  PSP isnt doing good and didnt do as great as the DS was because sony never had a proper target audience to go after...they jsut tried doing everything at once only to end up failing at all of them.

Nintendo took the time to start the console off as a gaming system that showed the potential of two screens and touch screens...

once this was accomplished (nintendogs, mario kart ds, etc..), they rebranded it as a system for "everyone".

this included young and old.

"touch generation" games fall  into this category.

once this took root, nintendo went after the media fanatic and re branded the DS as not just a gaming machine but a "media player".

This is the DSi.

it had non gaming features such as music, cameras for picture, built in internet browser, an "app" store, etc...

i am not sure what the DSi LX's target audience is jsut yet, but from sales it looks like nintendo sure does.

Anyhow, had sony taken the time an effort nintendo took with the DS they could have done much better...

i mean, before launch they even proclaimed that the PSP would get portable gaming out of the "gaming ghettos"...a company with that kind of arrogance must have turned some heads...right?

The PSP is not the market leader, so it doesn't get to last for 6 or more years.  It's like the Genesis; it put up a damn good fight, but it just can't keep up after this much time.  The Genesis couldn't handle Star Fox or Donkey Kong Country, and the PSP can't handle Nintendogs or Brain Training.  It's the only handheld gaming device without a touchscreen, which has become a necessary gaming feature for the majority of the market.

I don't think that's fair.  the Genesis was far more powerful than the NES, but the SNES severely outmuscled it.  I don't think anyone can say that about the PSP vs. the DS, unless specifically addressing the touchscreen.

Yeah I probably wasn't clear enough there.  I was actually trying to specifically address the touchscreen.  The Genesis didn't have games with the FX Chip and the PSP doesn't have games with a touchscreen.  I think most people recognize those differences more than all the cool techie multimedia features of the PSP.

Dr. Kawashima, the guy behind Brain Age on the DS, made a game for the PSP called Mind Quiz.  It had more exercises and better graphics, but didn't let you use any answer you want with a touchscreen or a microphone.  It used the 4 buttons to answer multiple choice questions.  I can't even find a Wikipedia article for the game.

OK, I see your point there, but the FX chip was really just icing on the cake of the technological curb stomp the SNES did to the Genesis.  (And only a few games used it, although Star Fox was certainly a major one.)  Whereas the touch screen is a MAJOR part of the DS's 'uniqueness advantage' (for lack of a better term off the top of my head) over the PSP; and lots of games use it (usefully ).

Also I believe Donkey Kong Country did not have the FX chip, which probably contributed to my confusion.

it does have a lot of titles , its just there is no marketing to them AT ALL, even for people like me who likes it,  i find it hard to look for titles even with internet.

I'm talking about flagship titles, games that're representatives for handhelds. Pokemon is the best example, that game can only be enjoyed with a Nintendo handheld system, Monster Hunter work great for japan but here in America we don't have those games. What PSP game can be considered as a flagship game here LocoRoco? Patapon?

console it's healthy in japan, and monters hunter its the new pokemon.

just unlikely pokemon it's not popular in america

PSP needs more games. And it's gonna get them soon when Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, God of War Ghost of SParta, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, THe 3rd Birthday, etc. But needs marketing!!! A friend of mine didn't even know a game called MGS Peace Walker existed until I told him about two months ago and that's because he doesn't check the net to see what games are coming soon and only goes to retailers once in a while to see what's on the shelves. But dude watches heaps of TV and he bought God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII because he saw ads for them on Australian TV!!!

MARKET THE BLOODY GAMES!!!

Features would help the most I think giving PSP users access to an app store would give them a direct alternative to the IPhone, combined with a price cut consumers could begin to see significant value in the system beyond games.
