Summary

Developed by Rockstar San Diego, as a follow up to the 2004 hit game Red Dead Revolver, Red Dead Redemption is a Western epic, set at the turn of the 20th century when the lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age. The story of former outlaw, John Marston, Red Dead Redemption takes players on a great adventure across the American frontier. Utilizing Rockstar's proprietary Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), Red Dead Redemption features an open-world environment for players to explore, including frontier towns, rolling prairies teaming with wildlife, and perilous mountain passes - each packed with  an endless flow of varied distractions. Along the way, players experience the heat of gunfights and battles,    meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it. As good as if not better than Grand Theft Auto IV and is as beautiful as a Hollywood epic.

This is simply a beautiful game, and it's provided more than a few moments where I completely forgot where the hell I was supposed to be going while riding over golden hills at sunset or through the desert in the middle of a nighttime lightning storm. It doesn't quite convey the loneliness of the real empty spaces, but does compress the essence of all the varieties of land and weather native to those parts into a few hundred miles ride.

Although this is said of almost every single new Rockstar product, Red Dead Redemption is arguably their best effort to date, if only because it distills all of the lessons they've learned from their previous titles into an engaging, expansive, and enthralling world. But the best part of Rockstar's open-world oater is its honest and open appreciation for the iconic Western genre.

The game perfectly captures the expansiveness of frontier life and the gritty gunplay of spaghetti westerns, rightfully earning its place alongside the great Western films and the best Rockstar games. [Issue#206, p.86]

This is so much more than a mere retooling of Rockstar's tried and tested open world formula – it's an artful take on a world long lost, an evocative paean to not only the Western genre but also to the beautiful expanse of the American landscape.

Rockstar has taken the Western to new heights and created one of the deepest, most fun, and most gorgeous games around. You can expect the occasional bug or visual hiccup, but you can also expect a fantastic game that offers the Western experience we've all been waiting for.

Is this a better game than GTA? Technically, atmospherically, visually: absolutely. Narratively? Too subjective to call. Will you enjoy it more than GTA IV? That depends on how much you like the setting.

Red Dead Redemption offers a script that Sergio Leone would have loved to film, and the epic of Sam Peckinhpah. A great sandbox, with a compelling story, that may not be a masterpiece, but it delivers. Have no doubts: ride your horse, play as John Marston and let yourself be swept away.

Red Dead Redemption is the best you could expect from Rockstar: a deep and lasting experience crowded with interesting characters and appealing missions. Where the title falls short is when it comes to facing the GTA IV legacy: you won't find innovation, if not in the beautiful environment. Still, a title you don't want to miss if you love either western setting, Rockstar titles or free roaming with a deep background.

Red Dead Redemption is without a shadow of a doubt a top game. The story alone will tie you over for at least fourteen hours, not adding random events and mini games. Add the extensive multiplayer and you’ll get at least twenty hours. Small tip: Play the game all the way to the end - a few surprises will definitely please you.

It offers the qualities we've come to expect from Rockstar in abundance, but just slips up short of GTA IV in delivering an experience that transcends the remit of a video game. Not quite a genre-defining experience, but one that offers a whole heap of entertainment for your money.

While Rockstar San Diego may find some difficulty in filling its open expanses with interesting and emergent play, it does imbue it with a stark beauty and compelling narrative that makes Redemption more than just an allusion to cinema, but a piece of work that can confidently stand next to it. Uh, nice thread. I'll be watching, hopefully this game won't carry too many GTA flaws, or I'll be turned off from it.

Oh nice. I wanted one of these threads for RDR.
