Forums - PC Discussion - Why Not Release Console Games On PC Thru Emulation?

Why don't console devs/publishers release their old games on PC? Emulation is perfect for that. They would only need to fiddle a bit with the emulator and done.

The strange part is that you see so many PC devs/publishers re-release old PC games thru emulation (DosBox for example), so it'd work with the new operative systems. Yet, when it comes to console games, no one is doing it.

How cool would it be for Square Enix to release a bundle of Final Fantasy 1-12 on Steam!?

I don't know.

However I do JRPGs wouldn't do too hotly on the PC. They are the console equivalent of strategy games and when pitted against strategy games for the PC they will fail miserably.

Because most older games have equal or better flash equivalents which people play all the time on sites. Remember the old games were made by small teams using poor tools, one person is can probably churn out a NES like game every 3-6 months for example.

Tease.

Just use emulators. You can at least play FF 1-9 with no trouble on PC.

Because modern games sell through hype. Nobody would pay money for 99% of PS2 generation games now, because the graphics are terrible now and the gameplay was never that great. The games people would pay money for are getting sequels and updated re-releases for current-gen systems with current graphics.

Also, PC gamers are notorious pirates. Devs don't want to spend money to make a product which will be stolen.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

Not all old console games are poor. There are a few that survived the test of time or are unique enough, like Killer 7 or God Hand (from what I've been told). Besides, with digital distribution and ease of emulation, those games would be sold at almost no risk.

Those games were niche and therefore they would not fare well on the internet where only the most popular games tend to rise to the top. They would be forgotton as soon as they were released, only the novelty of their porting would give them any attention what-so-ever. The titles which last the test of time are still controlled vehemently by their publishers so that wouldn't help either.

PC games sell more through word-of-mouth (reason why over 90% of sales of PC games are after the first week of release) not hype, which is why PC games often keep selling for years and years.

Also, put the price low enough, and people will gobble the games in DD services like Steam.

And all old console games are already pirated on PC. How would sell them on PC make them even more pirateable?!

Honestly if I want to see anything get emulated, it would be Sega Saturn games. The Sega Saturn had some great games out for it but there's no way to play those games without a Saturn right now. And since there's no piracy on the Saturn, you have no choice but to fork over a fortune to play Panzer Dragoon Saga and what not.

Because then too many of the games wouldn't be "exclusives" anymore!
