Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy 13 vs other JRPG's this gen

To those saying it's an action RPG, how do you figure? It still uses the turn-based combat system and you never actually play out any attack or action, so how is it an action RPG? Have you guys ever really played what you are describing?

The game is more linear than other FF games, but how does that make it an "action RPG"?

I would have to agree, while it's obviously a fast paced turn based RPG it is most definitely still turn based.  You don't have the control over character movement and a button to attack as I would expect from an action RPG.

Vesperia...7.9?....No no no, something's not right here.

Yeah you can even slow it down more if you wish, I don't understand some of these comments.

FFXIII doesn't deserve a 9+ score by any means.

Great story, solid voice acting, excellent battle system, beautiful graphics, amazing soundtrack...yeah doesn't sound like a 9+ to me either

Bad voice-acting (though this isn´t the fault of the team that did make it), bad writing, no towns, no interaction with the world and you can´t talk to the NPCs. Great graphics and a good battle-system though, but that´s about it.

I also recently finished Star Ocean International and I think that's a better game than FFXIII, and that one is also far from perfect.

Seriously? I hated Star Ocean 4 (I only have a 360 mind you, but I don't think voice differences will change the game much) but my wife loved it.

This is dissapointing, and honestly if It didn't have the Final Fantasy name I'd imagine the scores would be even worst. I'm getting my copy of FFXIII today or tommorow (waiting on Amazon, got it for $45 after credit and pre-order savings) but it looks like Lost Odyssey and TOV are still the better game?

The Japanese VA makes it a better game, but if you didn´t the like the original this one obviously won´t change your opinion.

Interestingly. FF13  is only just considered by the media as the number 1 JRPG  this gen.

We know production wise it is above the others by some way. It would appear that according to the average scores that games like LO, TOV and ES are all around the sam level as FF13. What fo you guys think. JRPG's have taken it hard this gen.

Here take a look.

Based on Meta.

Final Fantasy 13      =        82 PS3       ( 83 360 )

Eternal Sonata        =         79 360      ( 80 PS3 )

Tales Of Vesperia                =         79

Lost Odyssey          =        78

On the same token, while media has a heavy bias against JRPGs this gen, it seems many fans within the JRPG community itself seem to only be focusing on JRPGs on 'consoles'.  And that's the biggest problem.  With 90% of JRPGs coming out on handhelds, because oh...Japan is focused on the Handheld market this gen, its no wonder JRPGs in the west are being overlooked.  Because even the people trying to rally support for JRPGs aren't even paying attention to where the vast majority of JRPGs are.

If all you're looking for in a JRPG are high budget console productions with 'the best graphics', then perhaps that's why people are getting less interested in the genre and saying its 'lacking in content'.

I say first of all, forgot what the media scores JRPGs, because its well known that they've been downscoring JRPGs since last gen.  Its like asking the Academy Awards to give best picture to an international film.  Its not going to happen.  And second of all, start actually looking at ALL the JRPGs.  Which means, you need to actually look at some handheld games.  Which is, you know, where nearly all the JRPGs are at.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I did install LO... so maybe thats why I didnt get a SINGLE technical issue of any kind from my full play-through.

This.  I remember reading reviews after I beat the game (I always do that --I hate spoilers) and I read about all of the glitches.  They must have patched the game or something because for me, it ran flawlessly.

If I remember right most of the technical complaints were about insane loading times. When LO released there was no option to instal game to HDD.

Meta on JRPG this gen that are at least in the same score area or higher but not on your list:
Valkyria Chornicles = 86
Rune Factory Frontier = 80
Demon's Souls = 89
Mario and Luigi 1 = 86
Mario and Luigi 2 = 90
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor = 84
Every Main Pokemon release this gen is at least 83 and onwards.
and many others.

FF13 ain't shit according to Meta, and Meta shouldn't matter since if you like it, then you like it, as long as it's not Last Rebellion bad, then who gives a rat's ass?

Yeah FF XIII is the best jrpg this gen.

^ this man speaks the truth. Most of the JRPG's released this gen have been on the handhelds and thats not going to change any time soon. And considering that lots of JRPG's on handhelds have a 90+ metacritic rating, its pretty obvious that those are the systems of choice for JRPG's this gen you guys need to learn to accept that.
