Nothing happened per se. Just, remember how the Gamecube was mocked back in 2002? Remember the backlash from WW's reveal at TGS? In these forums GC was the greatest console ever from NIntendo and WW was never that controversial.

Hey friend, is it me or has this E3 been lame this year?

      x
Honestly, this entire gen of consoles is seemingly lame to me. It feels like groundhog day - upgraded graphics of old IPs. I didnt sit through the E3 conferences yet, I'll have to get a summary. I like the Zelda environment, but really, cell shading needs to die a miserable death.

      on 10 June 2014

      x
Yep, we've always seen eye to eye lol. I agree 110%. Sick of the anime Zelda, no console this gen brings anything appealing to the table. Miss 2006-2010.

Thus why I am mostly a Steam Gamer these days =) Tho the new Mario Kart is pretty badass

      on 11 June 2014

      x
Yeah, I'm hearing good things about Kart, other than the botched battle mode. If I decide to pick up a U I'll holla at you.

      on 12 June 2014

      x
most definitely! I never cared much for battle mode, so no loss there. =)

I'm sorry, maybe because the game industry declared me a casual gamer last gen, but so far this conference is extremely ho-hum. I'm bored watching this. I wonder if this was how gamers felt during Atari's final days.

      x
I haven't even bothered to tune in, but judging from the forum activity our reactions are pretty much the norm.

      on 09 June 2014

      x
2 Duds 1 more to go lol. This E3 really seems lame.

      on 09 June 2014

      x
At least four duds, no? EA and Ubisoft's were terrible too. But apparently we have to give them points for making a live conference or something?

      on 09 June 2014

      x
You're right! I forgot about those duds. You think we'll get 5/5? Or will Nintendo start something?

      on 09 June 2014

      x
I think Nintendo's will be better, if only because they're delightfully brief. Well, the main conference anyways: they've got those multiple lengthier roundtables later too.

I dunno, mark me down as cautious, but expecting them to do more than anyone has so far.

      on 10 June 2014

      x
You know, When I read other folks posting disappointment in Nintendo's digital events length, I actually thought that was a smart move. For me Smash alone gets my attention. If they bring anything else decent to the table (X, or an actual good console Zelda)

Imagine they show off a new 2D Mario game, done right this time, with excellent production values? Malstrom would even lose it. A man can dream.

MK8 convincing you to buy a Wii U? Or you still holding out until Nintendo's 7th console?

      x
I'm going to get one when X comes out, maybe Smash Bros. if that comes out first AND I haven't gotten fatigued from the 3DS version yet. But there's still not much rush on my part.

      on 28 May 2014

      x
Sentiments exactly. Smash will be my tipping point. Possibly.

      on 28 May 2014

      x
      Didn't say I wasn't thinking of buying MK8 now, just that I'm not buying a Wii U!

      x
When do you plan on getting a Wii U, Noname?

      on 05 June 2014

      x
Definitely around the time X releases, unless it turns out that the game is a complete dud (which I don't expect). Perhaps sooner, if a really good deal comes around. I almost bought the Skylanders $200 bundle the other week, but of course I ultimately didn't.

Think Nintendo will have DLC for battlemode in MK8? That seems to be the one (major/minor) flaw of the game...looking forward to your review

      x
It's possible. DLC for MK8 makes sense either way, we'll just have to see if they go the greed route or if they make an expansion like New Super Luigi U was.

Battle mode won't be considered a flaw in my review, I can you tell you that much. That mode has always been absolute garbage.

      on 27 May 2014

      x
You did not get your copy early already like some have?

      on 27 May 2014

Wednesday is usually the earliest I get my games, so two days before the official release date. Looks like that's going to be the case with Mario Kart 8 too.

Remember though, Wii's first March, Wii's were in extremely high demand. Console gaming was much healthier then. Other than that yes, Wii U, Vita and 3DS are meh-pathetic. Xbone and PS4 are impressive only in relative terms.

There's no real excitement in this industry atm.

      x
You are absolutely right about console gaming in the past being more healthy! Even if I did factor out the growth from the WII I would still expect a somewhat marginal decline anywhere from 10 million to at the worst case 30 million. Before we completely call off the entire generation as being doomed I still feel that we need at least a year to truly evaluate the new consoles to see where we are truly headed. No matter the outcome we will be heading into a decline but whether it's a small one or a big one will be the determining factor whether we can keep afloat.

This generation will be more about sustaining rather than growth.

      on 30 April 2014

      x
Absolutely, I think this gen will be about who loses the least instead of who wins.

I mean imagine Sony selling a decent amount of PS4's but still lose tons of $$. The PS4 performance in Japan is not a good sign. Xbone every where other than the states is putrid. Wii U is a disaster.

I don't think the smart phones and tablets are to blame for the decline. I blame the software output of all major devs and pubs.

      on 30 April 2014

      x
I don't think smartphones or tablets are the issue either as consoles can be differentiated from them. You are right about not having enough high quality releases. A decline in this industry will also hurt PC gaming too seeing as how a lot of it's high quality releases are shared with consoles. PC elitists can laugh it up all they want but it won't be so funny when they start getting lower quality games.

What's your verdict on DKC:TF? Considering a Wii U for that game.

      x
Great game. Fulfilled most expectations, but still only Rambi, repeated use of bonus rooms and one or the other strange exploit in time attack. Can't go wrong, if you liked the predecessor.

      on 23 February 2014

      x
One animal buddy is disappointing. Didn't care about time attack too much. I did enjoy dkcr. Would you say this is the better game overall?

      on 23 February 2014

      x
I'd say so. The new bad guys are better than the Tikis in Returns. There are now hidden exits in a few levels instead of the lame "buy a key from the shop" mechanic. The soundtrack is also better and the graphics by default too. More controller options, so that's another plus. The three different sidekicks are cool and it's rare that a specific one is required to reach a collectible, so nothing obnoxious in the level design.

Tropical Freeze has fewer levels than Returns (57+6 bosses vs. 63+8 bosses), but that's offset by the levels being a bit longer now.

      on 23 February 2014

      x
Hey thanks a lot Rol. Do you play with the Pro Controller, Wii Mote/chuck, or (gasp) the Gamepad?

Speaking of which I hear rumblings and echos of Nintendo fans asking for SKU's without the Gamepad..It's progress I guess.

      on 23 February 2014

      x
I play with the Gamepad. Might as well use it every now and then.

Among the people who asked for a Gamepad-less SKU have always been Nintendo fans. I don't think it's a good idea and more something along the lines of "let's just try everything". Basically desperation. And since Nintendo seems to plan to use NFC and other Gamepad features in the near future, a Gamepad-less SKU is probably not coming.

How's the saying go? Time creates more converts than reason? It seems that even the staunchest Nintendo fans are starting to admit to something being rotten in Denmark ; ) Dropping the Gamepad is now the choir.

I wonder if the Wii U's putrid market performance is actually Wii fans intentionally punishing Nintendo for their foolish (arrogant) return to their Gamecube ways? Something has to fundamentally change at Nintendo, that much is clear, but what do you think? Mal points to software and I agree. But I'm actually at a loss as to what software Nintendo can create to make mainstream gamers give a damn about them.

Nintendo has really done damage to their most healthy franchises, due to quirkiness and other factors, such as resource allocation etc.

Gaming is supposed to be fun right? Somehow I feel even this website forgot that. Hope alls well friend.

      x
All's well here indeed! Well, mostly: the site's attraction has been lessening in recent weeks, although I'm hopeful things will turn around soon on that front.

But yes, it's a rare person now who's still wholly on board the Wii U train. In light of how some of even their bigger IPs are floundering, I have to wonder what effect this will have on them next generation. I can see them either deciding to spruce up their legacy titles...or just go the Wind Waker HD route and re-release most of their Wii U games on the next system. It wouldn't even be the second time, what with the New Play Control series. Third time's the charm?

      on 20 February 2014

      x
Yes, going into next gen Nintendo is in a very precarious position. But every gen is unique for sure. I actually think there needs to be a scaling back from the big budget, bloated games that are being made across the board. The big cinema QTE wannabe movie games are complete garbage.

Even games like Mario Kart 8, like I wasn't a fan of bikes in MK Wii tbh. I miss the simplistic kart racing, fantastic battlemodes (battlemode haven't surpassed the SNES MK) On top of that, they have anti gravity? Why not just make an F-Zero?

It's like instead of creating new worlds, the devs continue to come up with quirky ideas and shoehorn them into established franchises. That doesn't work, and in fact, it hurts the overall strength of the games. I can't even get excited for the next Zelda because they've all been disappointing to me post OoT. And Skyward sword killed any faith I had left in the franchise. I don't know, enough of my rambling lol.

      on 20 February 2014

      x
I've been kicking around the idea for a while that Nintendo may be well served by trying to replicate what they did with Brain Age. Not making another Brain Age itself, mind you, but forming small teams, giving them small budgets and short timeframes, and telling them to produce something by the deadline. It wouldn't be particular resource-intensive, and while it'll produce lots of failures something good is equally likely to emerge, all on a short timespan. Plus it has more potential to expand their offerings than their current strategy ever could.

Seems reality is finally starting to sink in. In regards to Wii U's disasterous impact on Nintendo. What changes (not Iwata being fired, not happening) do you see occuring in the short/mid term?

      x
In the short term? Nothing. With games taking 18-24 months to develop, you aren't going to see any changes from Nintendo in 2014.

In the mid term? They are going to ride it out. They now know that it is a sinking ship. I am pleased that they are hiring more staff, but it's obviously unclear to me if that is to handle current HD development (because they are way behind on many games) or if it is already preparation for the future.

When you think about 2003/2004, Nintendo was declared to be as good as done. Just like they are now. What actually happened was that Nintendo quietly worked towards the DS and Wii and had the games lined up to get those systems off the ground. I can't say what the future holds, but I hope that something similar is going on behind the scenes right now. Executives questioning their previous decisions, thinking about solutions and preparing for proper execution.

      on 17 January 2014

      x
Those are my thoughts exactly. The Wii secretly had a steady stream of software since launch, I'm feeling the U will get the GC treatment from Nintendo and whatever is next will be much better supported from the get-go.
