    Hey-ho Canada bro! :)

I just read your post and it's very interesting. I can't comment on it in the thread because you shared alot of good ideas but it's hard to stay on track without enjoying the convo so I'll follow-up here.

I think there are alot of good points you bring up. How long will we need new consoles for? The jump is getting smaller and smaller every gen. It seems that now if I get a PS4 it's for minor aesthetic reasons, not enough to warrant the purchase of a console unless I want top of the line graphics, which is a vain quest really.

At the same time, I think the WiiU still has a market. The Wii desperately needs a graphical upgrade, and also needs to compete against the looming mobile market. Now, with the Ouya on the horizon, Nintendo will have competition from Android OS enabled devices within the living room. It's a good thing they got their tablets. imho Nintendo is in a solid position. They just need to create a rich diversity of games from the get-go for WiiU so consumers _NEVER_ feel like there is a lacking in gaming offerings. How they will do that, time will tell, but they really need to nail it this time.

Ahh but theres the problem...any upgrade takes them into the HD market. Their personal innovation is taking them to soemthing that exists. Their core business showed they really don't CARE about hd.

I see a bunch of WII owners buying because they identify with the Nintendo name however nextgen consoles are going to be like a Cadillac...they'll add a whole ton of things to the car that really don't affect the actual performance of the car.

As for the games, lets be honest...they're getting a little...meh. Again how do game makers design a game that is dramatically different from what's been done.

Going to be a troubling time...

    on 09 August 2012

The thing is though Psyberius, is that there is constantly a new generation of gamers to enjoy Nintendo's games. So though you may perceive them as getting "meh"er as time passes, these kids get to play the latest installments of these big-selling games.

At the same time, Nintendo is catering to the core or to an emerging core in a way the twins don't, with experiences like project CARS (which will sport better graphics) and Batman Arkham City and ZombiiU both sporting touch and pad controls.

    on 09 August 2012

I don't know. I wouldn't agree that 5-6 years is going to get them a ton of new people based on them being new to the market.

I see Nintendo's success in WII as a bit of a sword for all of the makers. They drew a ton of new people into the market however if console makers expect that the next generation is going to build significantly on that, I think they're least initially. I cannot see *ANY* scenario where all those 10's of millions of people who bought a WII based on it being new and very novel with its cordless controller going out to replace it. Look at their game sales...a HUGE difference between their console base and their game sales. A CRAPTON of those WII's are sitting on an entertainment system pointedly reminding people they bought something they rarely use. Also, consider that a number of people using WII's are not technically inclined...they LOVE the WII because it is cool and simple to use. Tablets and displays in their hands? Quite a jump....I believe that a ton of gamers love just sitting down and playing a game, not having to mess with overly complex interfaces like all the console makers are heading to. I myself am looking at what's coming up and scratching my head and trust home has more hardware than a ton of companies datacenters have.(including 3 2U Xeon servers and my new 16 tb retires their hardware ever 3 years and the hardware is downstreamed to myself and then the people who work under me. yum.) Using my Xoom tablet to control my consoles? Sounds very gimmicky. Why? Why do I want something other than a game on my bigscreen tv?

We might even see a shrinkage of sales numbers over the last generation for a couple years... Crazy thought I know but its possible. It's very very hard to see any of the makers being able to grab people and rip the money out of their wallets like they did this gen.

True, but Nintendo has an appeal that has never left. They were able to meet the interests of younger children with the gameboy, why would that suddenly change. Of course the iPods and iPads can do all kinds of things, but none are the Nintendo portables. As such, Nintendo products have an alluring property that many products would dream of having. The iPo/ads have pokemon? No. Do they have Mario? Nope ;) Do they have all kinds of other great games kids have come to love from all kinds of gaming companies? I don't think just yet.

So to call grim at this time of market transitions may be a tad too early. If 3DS fails to penetrate the west this holiday, then I would be worried.
