    Are you on Steam?

Nah. I mean I am but I hardly game these days... Haven't booted up steam in months. I mostly hang of Xbox Live, primarily for media purposes.

    on 05 January 2015

That's sad to hear. If you change mind and become active on Steam, please remember to add me! You're such a cool guy.

    on 12 January 2015

Thanks man. Yeah I wish I still had time to game, and participate in all of the video game chatter around here. Due to work and family life I've not had much free time to dedicate to gaming at all.

When my kid is old enough I'll probably start gaming with him again. :)

    on 15 January 2015

How old is he now? U make sure he becomes a gamer lol

So get this. A while back (like 2 years), I asked you about a failed SMART test on my dad's computer. Low and behold, the hard drive finally completely crashed on us.

Well, with our luck, my dad's hard drive at his office was acting up as well, and that crashed within weeks of the same time. Lets take the story about 2 weeks later, and another guy at my dad's office just had his hard drive crash too. I ordered these 2 computers at the same time...I guess it was cheap parts.

3 danged hard drives all crashing in like a months time. 2 of the computers were only 2 years old, and the other probably 4. Just ridiculous.

Regardless, my dad has since learned his lesson, and he now has me build his computers with much more reliable parts instead of ordering the cheap ones.

Yeah I recall our convo. Hard drives can fail but when so many fail it does smell of bad parts... It may not have been the hard drives too. Maybe the PSU was really bad and had a massive ripple which damaged other parts.

In terms of hard drives and backup storage, I've started using FreeNAS and its awesome. I built a dedicated machine with over 12TB of storage which uses ZFS and allows me to plug in any spare drives I have to add to my total storage at any time. If a drive fails, I just unplug it without any data loss...

Something to consider if you're tired of dealing with multiple external hard drives and them failing.

Always a pleasure having tech chats!

Absolutely. I made one more post which hopefully explains why things may get repetitive with me sometime :)

    on 12 September 2013

Makes sense. I think my issue is I'm not giving AMD the benefit of the doubt. Admittedly, because of my recent builds, I've become a bit of an Intel/nVIDIA "hybrid" fanatic!

    on 12 September 2013

Yeah I suggest trying an AMD build when you have some free time man. It really doesn't have to be expensive... Just look around for sales and you can probably pick up a quad or six core AMD cpu+mobo platform for $150 bucks. Once you have the mobo and cpu you can play around and overclock things, benchmark, compare with your intel. I find this more fun than gaming these days...lol

    on 12 September 2013

What about micro-stutter? Aren't AMD cards just a bit worse for that?

As you probably figured, I only do SLI (or Crossfire) builds, so that would be a concern of mine.

    on 12 September 2013

Yeah they are worse. I know first hand going from GTX 670s to 7950s, But the latest 13.8 drivers made great improvements and have put them on par with Nvidia in terms of dual GPU support. Only caveat is that it only works with 2 cards and single monitors for now. I do think that AMD gets it now and should be able to make microstuter go away with the 9000 series cards.

Here is a cool article about these latest drivers - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/catalyst-13.8-frame-pacing-crossfire,3595.html

Do you have a Microsoft Surface or know a good deal about it?

I do have a Surface RT at home. Also we have a Surface Pro and few other W8 tablets at work since we made a video streaming app for Windows 8.

If you're looking to get one, don't let the FUD about windows RT stop you. Device is great as long as you have a PC/Laptop as well where you can do some of the more demanding x86 tasks.

The app store is getting better(100K apps already), device is way more functional than the iPad, and its by far the most functional and durable form factor you can carry around with you.

    on 12 July 2013

I actually have one, and I love all the features but it's gotten so unbearably slow and I don't have a clue how to fix it. Games play just fine on it but everything takes forever to load and the internet is especially cumbersome and slow.

Any advice on how to fix this would be deeply appreciated.

    on 12 July 2013

The troubleshooting steps are somewhat limited with surface RT

First I'd check to see if there are any updates left to install:

Select Settings from Charms menu, change PC settings, windows update, check for updates...

There are other hacks you can try to speed it up, like this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41080358

But I wouldn't bother with hacks as the device shouldn't be slow.

I would probably perform a system wipe and restore if updates don't fix your issue. (charms, settings, change pc settings, general, remove everything and reinstall windows at the bottom)

    on 12 July 2013

OK, I'll try the system wipe. In the future, is there anything I can do so it doesn't get slow like that again?

    on 12 July 2013

So I re-loaded it and now it works great again. I found out that my problem was that I had absolutely no room on my C drive which brings me to a final question.

Is there any way to get apps and games to install onto the micro SD card that I have on there?

    on 13 July 2013

No sadly. Apps and games can only go on the internal storage.

You can get 3.5 GB extra space if you delete the recovery partition. But make sure to back it up on a USB, possibly several USBs lol

    on 13 July 2013

Hey 3.5 GB's is better than nothing lol. Can't you also delete a couple GB's of stored maps or something like that as well?

When do you foresee the consoles really helping to create better PC ports? Year's end, perhaps?

Yeah I see PC ports of consoles being a lot better next gen. And vice versa...something like Witcher 3 should be kickass on consoles.

    on 26 June 2013

Not sure I buy the idea that APUs with 7790/7870 will push PCs though. PC GPUs are more than capable of being "pushed" by consoles and whatever tricks they implement to enhance the visuals...its the same architecture.

    on 26 June 2013

It will be interesting to see what the most PC-savvy devs do next gen. I expect some mind-blowing stuff!

Nice thread. You bring up good points, the masses just don't see it yet. You're like Pythagoras! The guy who first believed the world to be spherical! That's what it feels like being an Xbox fan on this site right now!

    hahaha...good comparison.

Yeah I'm quite sure that most of next gen will be spent by Sony trying to shoehorn digital features and experience on to PS4 that Xbox One will provide first. Most of this site will be "all digital" with DRM love and all by 2015, and then they will be slamming new stuff that Xbox One will be introducing.

    on 18 June 2013

    Well, this is awkward.

    on 19 June 2013

We would have saved $1000s this gen if it wasn't for people online complaining about the 24 hour online check ONLINE!

Game sharing is gone, this is a major loss for me.

    on 20 June 2013

Yeah... Im already looking in to building a crazy powerful media PC to mimick Xbox Ones features or just update my regular PC and get a Roku box for cable.

Not sure I'm gonna be there day 1 for Xbox One. May get a WiiU insteadif Bayonetta 2 and Sonic Lost World turns out to be good.

    on 20 June 2013

I've still got my pre-order and I intend on keeping it but this... Just because of blind arrogance and hate towards MS... Let's face it. People hate change+People hate MS= All this bullshit over nearly nothing. The people on this forum should boycott vgc by that logic, it requires online 24/7.

    on 20 June 2013

Yeah I suspect within 2-3 years a lot more digital copies and game codes will be sold than disks. I mean the advantages are vast once you discount the reselling. Maybe then Microsoft will re-introduce some of the sharing features.

    on 20 June 2013

I'm hoping you can sign up for it personally. Providing you've paid for xblg for a year or so. People who buy monthly cards should be able to try it with 1 game only or something.

It's what I'd do. They built the servers, might as well use them.

    on 20 June 2013

"We would have saved $1000s this gen if it wasn't for people online complaining about the 24 hour online check ONLINE!"

I already called you out on this, but that is 1000s of $ that the developers/publishers wouldn't get.

Now how can you believe it would work as promised if people would just turn it into ThePirateBay 2.0?

    on 26 June 2013

Who knows. Only one person can play the game at any given time and saves would be transferable. I only see the feature being heavily used towards the middle/end of the gen for backlogs.

It's what I was thinking anyway. The original owner of the game would surely get preference.

I imagine all this DRM chatter for the X-One doesn't bug you because you're, primarily, a PC man and normally deal with it anyway. I'm not sure, 100%, my feelings on the matter, but I'm not as stirred as a chunk of gamers are right now. I still want the damn thing!

Glad to hear some people around here are open minded lol.

I'm personally just having fun with this tonight but in essence I really don't care. I think people are getting stirred up over nothing. Everyone feels like they have to defend the sacredness of gaming and consumerism or something...

I'll probably buy 3-4 games on the Xbox One per year and just keep gaming on the PC. Life goes on.

    on 06 June 2013

Sounds like a good enough solution to me. :)
