From what European forum users say here saying Playstation to mean any gaming system is the default over there, perhaps in USA older people say Nintendo. In Brazil though I only remember people using videogame for generic.

Yep, Europe wasn't a big gaming market prior to PlayStation, so it makes sense that the first console that was really popular there is the one that's used as a generic title for consoles.
