Star Fox 64 is definitely the apex of the series, and one of my favorite games of its generation. It was a huge step up from the original, which was a very rudimentary attempt at that sort of gameplay and as a result hasn't aged well. All the later games tried too hard to reinvent the formula, and fell flat IMO. As a shoot-'em-up, SF64 quite short, but all the different possible pathways, combined with the self-imposed challenge of beating your best high score (if you're into that sort of thing), gives it tremendous replay value.
