What's a viable platform? One that sells hardware and software.

Playstation's dominance worldwide means it will get all the third party Japanese and Western support which will in turn keep it viable in Japan.

Pretty much every AAA Japanese and Western game is a PS exclusive in Japan due to no SW version and XB and PC being dead. And there are still many AA exclusives PS gets. 

Not sure what your bad news is: PS4 will have a LTD of 9.5 million+.
