Whatever happened to the Steam Machines? Are they still a thing?
As far as I know, they launched, were ignored and then completely forgotten. Which is what could be expected after it was announced that Valve pursued essentially the same business model as 3DO: Have different hardware makers compete for sales while Valve takes all the profits from game sales. Valve wins regardless of which company sells a Steam machine, but every company that sells a Steam machine loses because they have to undercut the prices of their competitors to sell their own Steam machine, all the while they get virtually nothing from software sales.
I don't think there was even a price war, because every involved company quickly realized how much of an outright flop the whole idea was.
