A storm that has dumped 60 inches of snow on Erie since Sunday night will bring another heavy blast of lake-effect snow to portions of Erie County Tuesday night and Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland is forecasting possible snow accumulation of an additional 7 inches Tuesday night and into the early morning Wednesday.

“We’ve got another lake-effect band offshore on Lake Erie that should be moving along the Erie shoreline this evening,″ said Cory Mottice, a meteorologist with the NWS in Cleveland. “You’ll see the heaviest snow through 3 a.m. Wednesday. After that, it will be light snow showers most of Wednesday.″

The weather service is forecasting 2 inches to 4 inches of snow in the Erie region on Wednesday.

What will Erie do with all its snow?

Dale Robinson, Erie County’s Emergency Management coordinator, said the city of Erie will likely follow its standard procedure of dumping all of this excess snow into Presque Isle Bay near the Erie Wastewater Treatment Plant. Snow can also be placed in large fields if needed.

Though the forecast shows no immediate warm-ups, Robinson said the county will have to prepare for such a scenario, which could lead to flooding and several other problems.

EMTA had already limited its service during the day Tuesday:

  • Routes 14, 16, 105 and 229 will not be running Tuesday and all rural Erie County service has been canceled.
  • The Intermodal Transit Center will not be serviced.
  • Route 3 will stay on Peach Street due to impassable parking lots and side streets.
