LOL, the SNES and Genesis already had a ton of games not aimed at kids you have no clue what you are talking about.

It is definitely true that there was a stigma that games were for kids, regardless of those games being directed at them or not. It's the reason why, for example, Mortal Kombat was so controversial when it released - not because it was too gory for the adults, but because everyone was concerned it was too gory for kids.
