I don't think there were many better sequels in the history of gaming than this one. After Red & Blue established Pokémon and its central concept, Gold & Silver came along and really brought everything to the next level, with much prettier visuals, a day and night cycle, the ability for Pokémon to hold items and breed offsprings, the separation of the Special stat into Sp. Def and Sp. Atk, a new and more interesting story, 100 new awesome species to find, an absolutely killer soundtrack, a huge new region and obviously the enormous post-game that allowed you to revisit Kanto in its entirety, and even more stuff I'm forgetting to talk about. These games were truly something special.
