Then the ps2 was an anomally and sony home consoles have been declining since the ps.
"The hardcore Nintendo fanbase even decreased during the Wii gen because the Wii U is selling less than the Gamecube, which leads me to believe the actual Nintendo fanbase that bought the Wii was somewhere between the GCN and Wii U. No way did it increase over GCN and then took such a massive dive gen over gen. It is obvious where the bulk of the Wii install base came from and where it went."
That doesn't make any sense. You seem to be under the idea that consumers can't come and go. the wii was bought by many ps owners from the previous gen, as well as people that bought N64 and snes but not the gamecube.

The PS3 was clearly the anomaly considering the fact that the PS4 is tracking ahead of both of them (your point is already invalid). Sony didn't ship an unusually large amount of hardware annually with the PS2, it's just that the PS2 and PS3 co-existed for many years due to the incredible blunders they made with the PS3. This artificially extended the PS2's lifespan while eating into the potential sales for the PS3. Taken as one continuous system the Playstation consoles have never had a period that even came close to being as anomalous as the Wii was for Nintendo.

If you think the wii is an anommaly , you are forced to accept the ps2 as an anomally too. there's no middle ground. Who cares about ps4 tracking? it won't even scratch ps2 numbers and might not even reach ps3 numbers. And don't come with excuses, ps2 post 2006 sales came mostly from developing countries, it didn't eat into potential ps3 buyers.
