Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why Project Natal Will Be Better Than Both Sony and Nintendo's Ideas

When I saw the "fighting" demo for Natal I thought to myself - sorry that's just marketing. We as normal geek sloths will never be able to do a 12 phase combo.

I can see Natal working very well with certain applications maybe with less dexterous style sport actions such as baseball or tennis (say, much better than the Wii style, "I will now just use wrist flick actions since it is much more efficient and accurate").

I can't see Natal working well with fighting games or driving games. For driving games you need that tactile feel of a steering wheel in your hand. Holding your hands around an imaginary well and flicking an invisible gear shift? Nope! not I.

So yes, Natal will be great with certain applications and no doubt the imaginations of game designers will allow it to be used for things that I probably can't imagine. However, it is a niche style for controlling. The good old game pad is probably the most versatile design ever for games in general. It is the most adaptable.

Don't get me wrong, Natal will shine where it is applicable but it is in no way a complete replacement for the game controller.

I see the wand style motion controllers as more evolutionary and more versatile (not as versatile as a traditional game controller). I see Natal as a niche and if they (MS) continue to market it as being able to replace a traditional game controller for games like Tekken, DOA, or SFIV, then MS is sadly mistaken.

I like to be able to think I can see paradigm shifts happening in action but Natal is not going to suddenly endow me with the dexterity of Bruce Lee. The line between controller and person will forever be ridged.

I suspect movements will be simplified. Do you honestly thinl MS has not thought about this?

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

I only hope that it will work with people of all shape and ethnicity. There were some bad rumors about that subject

Natale has some avantages over Wii Motion Plus and the Sony Wand in the technology aspect, but also it was many disadvantages over the two in terms of gaming experience. Natal looks more oriented to be widely successful in software applications, but in gaming it has so many limitations that a peripheral will be required. But a peripheral will go against the no-controler philosophy of Natal, so the dilemma will be present

and they were cleared up.

honestly yes. but they have until 2010 to prove it.

@ironman

Again, you can't do a 12 move combo. Of course they have to simplify it but this is how it was "marketed".

Fighting games work with dexterity of the traditional button controller and joy stick. Like I said, I can see great applications for where Natal will shine but you can't convince me that it will replace traditional controller.

It's simply less versatile. Not because it is technologically inferior. It's technological superior, for what it does. I just think it's delusional if one thinks Natal is as versatile as a game controller.

I see the wand style controllers as evolutionary but still having more versatility than Natal but still less versatility than the traditional style controller.

This is just my opinion - I don't expect you to agree with it.

So to quote you, "I suspect movements will be simplified. Do you honestly thinl MS has not thought about this?"

All I can say is I hope so and you would think so. Obviously the group that is designing Natal are smart. I just hope common sense comes along with it, as well.

The Natal video was fake. Does anybody really expect to scan a skateboard to create a virtual skateboard? That is never going to happen. It will be cheaper, easier, faster, and better to just select a skateboard program or say "skateboard" or something. There is no reason to actually buy a skateboard and hold it up to the camera. That was just bells and whistles for their neato sci-fi concept video that won't actually be realized. Microsoft makes these videos all the time.

Or who knows, maybe Natal will be magic, and Milo will be able to read our minds and be Molyneux's "true AI" that he claims he's created every 2 years, and then Microsoft will actually do everything in this video by the year 2019:

I love new control methods, and I will try several of them on Natal, but I'm not buying any of this hype until I can touch the thing. And so far racing without a controller doesn't add anything to the racing experience. Are you going to do complex finger poses (like Naruto jutsus or something) to shift gears, shoot weapons, drift, or change cameras?

of course the rumors were cleared up. Do you honestly think a company like Microsoft would have let those rumors uncleared.

if developers can't make the most out of the wii mote i doubt they can make the most of natal, hope im wrong but dont think i will be.

I don't remeber seeing it "marketed"  as though one must do fighting moves verbatum. Sure some of the simpler moves that really don't take much, but show me where a 12 move combo was advertised to "need" a 12 move combo input.

If you agree with my statement, then why did you even bother posting yours? That's a little deceitful if you ask me.
