Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can You Create A Must-Have Wii Game? A very good article

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3956/can_you_create_a_musthave_wii_.php

A very good article - highlighting everything we discuss here.

According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, a successful Wii game often scores big because it has a great concept, has a high recognition factor, and does a good job of utilizing the Wii controllers. Pachter is senior VP, research, at LA-based Wedbush Morgan Securities.

"The Wii audience isn't sophisticated enough to know whether the game they're buying compares favorably to, say Gears of War or LittleBigPlanet, because they probably don't own an Xbox 360 or a PS3," Pachter explains.

"They buy the Wii games that they buy for the same reason that people go to McDonald's. McDonald's doesn't win a lot of restaurant critic awards but they are approachable, they're consistent, and you know what they're going to serve you."

This is a very good point and Nintendo is doing very well providing what consumers want.

So basically, the average Wii gamer isn't sophisticated enough to know a good game from their own butthole and they share similiarities with the average McDonalds customer.

Thanks Pachter.

You stay classy, Pach-man.

yeah, i thought it was funny, but the rest of the article is very pro wii.  (I think). and gives good reasons for it's success.

It's one of te few times that the word "sophisticated" is used in a wrong way on a gaming site

The whole thing was an argument for well-targeted shovelware that understands its audience. This article would have been appropriate 2 years ago, but Wii development should have moved beyond this by now. Accessibility is key, yes, but then you need to move beyond that. A lake with gentle shallows, but with mysterious depths. Otherwise you alienate the consumers with shallow products.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Two points.

The first is talking about Game Party 2. The reason that the second one was done was because the first one sold nearly 2M units. But it (the second one) was done poorly and people realized that and it sold only about one-third as well as the original. While almost 700k is good -- when it is a follow-up to a nearly 2M seller, it is not so good and shows that people learn quickly when being served a poor product.

The second is the comment in the comment section that de Blob was outside 3:1 by the Price is Right and similarly by Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader. But VGChartz numbers has de Blob almost outselling the Wii versions of those two games combined (590K vs. 350K + 270K). And THQ claims 700K copies of deBlob and considers it a success.

So it just goes to show that there is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about the Wii.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
