PS4 vs DS – VGChartz Gap Charts – January 2020

PlayStation 4 Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 156,857 – DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 5,594,893 – DS

Total Lead: 34,756,798 - DS

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 106,989,259

DS Total Sales: 141,746,057

January 2020 is the 75th month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for. During the latest month the gap grew in favor of the Nintendo DS when compared with the PlayStation 4 during the same timeframe. The Nintendo DS has grown its lead over the PlayStation 4 by 156,857 units and in the last 12 months outsold the PlayStation 4 by 5.59 million units. The Nintendo DS currently leads by 34.76 million units.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan and March 2005 in Europe, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 106.99 million units, while the Nintendo DS sold 141.75 million units during the same timeframe.

The 75th month on sale for the PlayStation 4 is January, while for the Nintendo DS it is January 2011.

The Nintendo DS ended up selling 154.02 million units lifetime. The PlayStation 4 needs to sell another 47.03 million units to outsell the Nintendo DS.

DS still widening the gap even at this late stage; so much for Nintendo systems never having legs, as people keep claiming when discussing Switch's lifetime sales.

It's easy to forget what an absolute titan the DS was in terms of sales.

No, Wii did well in 2010, selling over 17 million units.

Hmh. Did it happen to have explosive Holidays but a disappointing run during the year? I recall that was when the PS3 started doing better in the charts.

Weekly sales for the Wii in 2010 started very strong, but went down a lot between April and September. In Winter, the Wii was selling about 300k per week, but by September, that dropped to only half of that anymore. Strong holiday sales made that the end numbers still looked quite good, but it was foreshadowing over what was about to happen saleswise in the next years.

Game Boy might win for the longest legs in gaming.

True that. NES and SNES were fairly leggy too as I recall.

Btw, could we possibly get a little PS4 vs Switch action in here now the latest chart is up? :)

Switch is about to blow past 3DS + Wii U.  Hopefully this will dispel the myth that the Switch is only selling to the "Nintendo market".

At this point the Wii U isn't even really contributing to the 3DS + Wii U total. Switch has this in the bag.

Yeah that was always a nonsense claim, and I suspect usually made simply to downplay the system's potential.

When it first released there was a chance of that. But after the first year the claim sounded ridiculous. Success or failure one generation doesn't mean the same will happen the next generation.

And yet people are already predicting PS5 victory before any games have been announced or its price.

PS4 vs Xbox One in the US – VGChartz Gap Charts – January 2020

PS4 Vs. XOne US:

Gap change in latest month: 56,428 – PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 941,064 – PS4

Total Lead: 4,705,996 – PS4

PS4 Total Sales: 32,376,579

Xbox One Total Sales: 27,670,583

In January 2020 the gap in the US between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One grew in favor of the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 sold 56,428 more units than the Xbox One in the last month.  The PlayStation 4 has also sold 941,064 more units in the last 12 months.  The PlayStation 4 currently leads by 4.71 million units.

The PlayStation 4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Xbox One launched on November 22, 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 32.38 Million units, while the Xbox One has sold 27.67 million units.

The PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 60.05 million units in the US. The PS3 and Xbox 360 sold a combined 72.13 million units lifetime in the US. The PS4 and Xbox One need to sell another 12.08 million units to reach the sales of the previous generation.

It's still weird seeing them so close when worldwide the gap is more than 2:1. The United States really has a relative affinity for the Xbox brand compared to the rest of the world, for whatever reason.

We're nearing the point where both console will have the same number of holidays (36 months) and it looks like the Switch will retain its lead this time around.

Really hope shortages don't fuck with Switch sales this year too much. And hopefully that any lost sales over the next few months simply translate to later purchases down the line.
